SUMMER SABBATICALS GRANTED Summer sabbaticals have been granted to three mem bers of the faculty for the summer of 1968. Dr. Collins announced that Drs. Raymond E. Bauer, John W. Kilgore and Jack E. Tea garden have been granted the sabbaticals for travel, research and study in their respective teaching fields. Dr, Bauer, associate profes sor of education, will engage in a seminar and field trip entitled “Contrasts in Culture and Life Under Communism,” which is being sponsored by several national education so cieties in cooperation with Kent State University. Included in the plans are travel and study in Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Russia. Dr. Kilgore, chairman of the department of chemistry and physics, will spend the sum mer on the Wesleyan and Duke University campuses doing re search in the chemistry labor atories. H(! will work closely with Dr, Pelham Wilder, Jr., his graduate research director at Duke, in an attempt to or CHAPTER from Page 1 throughout the country. Dr, Teagarden, chairman of the Humanities Division, will visit museums and galleries in Florence, Rome, Salzburg, Paris, London and Stratford, collecting materials to aid the development of the humanities program and to further his personal literature study. In addition, he will continue his research on sixteenth century stage-directed polemics. Finances for the sabbaticals are being provided by the Col lege’s budgeted fund and through a grant from the Knapp Fund which was awarded to the col lege to assist its faculty in programs of study, enrichment and professional growth. DEAN WILDE’S PARTY A SUPER SURPRISE Monday, November 20. 1967 WESLEYAN STUDENTS HAVE NO CLASS Why is it that Wesleyan stu dents will not have the oppor tunity to attend a formal dance at their school this academic year? If some student really has the desire to attend a for mal affair, why is he not al lowed to? Many people feel that a dance held in a formal manner is a much more mem orable affair than a semi- formal occasion, to say noth ing of the “Sock-hop” affairs in the cafeteria. Why is this? Because perhaps more time and effort is put into the even ing than just a few decorations and a live band, which is what the normal Wesleyan dance boils down to. Perhaps some people sin cerely don’t want a formal dance. They may be the kind who have no desire for the type of dance to which they are not accustomed. This is perfectly logical, and in no way undesirable. But the fact that these people (who just might possibly be in the minority) are setting the pace, and functioning in such a way that NO Wesleyan stu dents get the chance to go to a formal dance, perhaps is very unfair. If no one cares that much about the social life here to do anything about this situa tion, or at least even ponder the alternatives, a re-evalua- tion of values may be in order. Events must be planned far, far in advance. If it is too late this year to attempt or ganizing a Spring Formal, or something along that idea, something should be done about its possibility of inception dur ing the ’68-’69 school year. • N. C. Sev eral returning grapplers, depth in each class, and a new coach, should spell great success this year. Returning grapplers are Whit Blackstone and Nat Railey (DIAC Conference Champions]^ and Tony DeMuth. Joining the team this year are men with previous high school exper ience. The high points seem to be in Tom Underwood. A 6 ft. 2 in. freshman who weighs in at 143 pounds, he should be top man in the conference in the 137-pound class. Jenks Davenport, although relatively inexperienced, has tremendous strength which will help as he fills the vacated 160-pound slot. So all in all, this year looks like it will be the best in Wesleyan’s wrestling history. With a second place position in the DIAC last year, there’s not but one way the team can go - Number 1. One highlight this year is in Jack Hart, the new coach, Mr. Hart may be remembered from last year as the striped-shirt gentleman who officiated the •home matches and DIAC Wrest ling Tournament. After wrest- .ling in high school, he was on the Duke team for several years. Last year he helped the team as his schedule per mitted, but this year he will be able to participate in a full time role. His knowledge and experience should prove to be a great asset. Coach Music will be the as sistant Coach and work with the team also. The one weak point will be at heavyweight with the loss of Leon Anderson. Skip Wil liams will be called upon to fill this vacancy. Although he is small as heavyweights go, his coordination and quick re flexes should be the compen sating factors. jL-0 WATCH FOR IT . . .
