OCTOBER 23,1992 — THE DECREE — PAGE 7 Lady Bishops soccer team wins two Earlier this month, the nation ally fifth-ranked women’s soccer team hosted conference foe Greensboro College and came away with a 5-0 win, then trav eled to Lynchburg College for the last away game of the season and came home with a 6-0 victory. The hosting Lady Bishops scored two minutes into the Greensboro College contest on a penalty kick taken by senior midfielder Kate Mangrum. Mangrum’s score would be the lone score of the first half, as Wesleyan recorded another 14 shots on goal without hitting the back of the net. In the second half, the Lady Bishops scored four goals. Junior forward Kerri Makaar scored three minutes into the second half after receiving a great cross from sophomore defender Tina Riley. Sophomore stopper Kathleen DeFreitas scored from 25 yards out 14 minutes later to put Wes leyan up 3-0. Freshman forward Christina McShain produced her second goal of the season, tucking a cross home from sophomore forward Chris Webb. The scoring ended when junior midfielder Julie Duerler flicked a one-touch ball into Mangrum who volleyed home her second goal of the match. “We were sluggish in the first half,” said head coach Patrick Baker. “We had no intensity up top and missed numerous chances to score. In the second half we seemed to settle down and be come more focused in the offen sive third.” The Lady Bishops also started slowly against Lynchburg Col lege. Sophomore midfielder Nene Danieu took a pass from Duerler and beat the keeper one-on-one to score the lone goal of the first half. Men^s soccer team falls to VMI, but comes back to defeat Coker The men’s soccer team lost in overtime against Virginia Mili tary Institute, 4-3, but came back later in the week to defeat Coker College, 3-0. Against hosting VMI, the vis iting Bishops were down three goals at the half, but scored three goals of their own in the second half to force overtime. Sophomore forward Chad Garbrandt scored the Bishops’ first goal 64 minutes into the match after receiving a fine ball from freshman defender Courtney O’Brien. Ten minutes later, se nior Jeff Walker scored on a one- on-one with the keeper to pull the Bishops within a goal. Garbrandt, who assisted Walker’s goal, would score the equalizer two minutes from time to make it 3-3. Both Wesleyan and VMI had great chances to score in the first OT period. VMI scored in the 110 minute of play to give the Bish ops their sixth loss of the season. The men then traveled to South Carolina for a weekend game against Coker College and came home with a 3-0 shutout. Freshman goalkeeper Pat Hartigan received his first start of the year and responded with Fitness Week sponsored In an effort to improve the ex ercise habits of college students. North Carolina Wesleyan College was one of 250 colleges and uni versities of aU sizes across the U.S. that participated this week in Timex Fitness Week, spon sored by Ocean Spray and en dorsed by the National Intramu- ral-Recreational Sports Associa tion. As part of the week dedicated to working out. Ocean Spray pre sented the “World’s Largest Aerobics Class,” a free aerobics class held Wednesday afternoon. During the week-long dedica tion to fitness, each school’s rec reational sports department has showcased a variety of running, swimming, cycling, and aerobics events ranging from introductory clinics to triathlons. Activities at Wesleyan inr. eluded a one-mile Fun Run on Tuesday, a lunchtime endurance test and the aerobics class on Wednesday, a Mini-Olympics on Thursday, and a basketball shoot out today from noon to 1 p.m. seven saves and a clean net. Garbrandt continued his scoring ways, scoring a goal in each half and bringing his total to nine. Freshman Erik Ursiak scored an unassisted goal to give the Bish ops a 3-0 win. “It was a good week for our guys — losing a tough match to VMI in overtime and then re bounding with a 3-0 win against a good Coker squad,” said sec- ond-year head coach Spencer Smith. “It was great to see our second shutout of the year and I hope we can continue our great play from the second half of the Coker game.” The week left the team with a 2-6-1 record overall and a 0-2 record in the Dixie Conference. The team went on to visit nation ally ranked Methodist College and returned home for Homecom ing Weekend games against Washington College and Guilford College. Lady Bishops volleyball team loses two game, drops to 4-12 The Lady Bishops volleyball team dropped games to confer ence foe Ferrum College and St. Paul’s, dropping the team’s record at the time to 4-12 overall and 0- 4 in the Dixie Conference. Traveling to Ferrum College, the women lost in three straight games, 6-15,9-15,6-15. “We missed out on a great op portunity to come up.with a.big win, ajt, Fencum,’.’ hjea^ Qmch.... Charlie Long. “Our ladies played hard and really gave it a solid effort.” The Lady Bishops hosted St. Paul’s and lost in three close games, 9-15,11-15,12-15. “We have to improve on the little things as a team,” said coach Long. “We can turn this season , around if.W.e Jtnake the proper ajl- jwjwmis-”,..,.... Mangrum collected her third goal in four days after a great run and ball from sophomore sweeper Trish Parker. The Lady Bishops’ third goal came on a header by sophomore midfielder Gwen Pacharis after she latched onto a cross from Webb. Senior midfielder Debbie Wade set up Webb minutes later for a 4-0 lead. McShain headed home a cross from Pacharis at the far post for the fifth goal, and Webb scored her second of the day to make it 6-0. “The ladies played well at Lynchburg and we scored six very good goals,” said coach Baker. “We knocked the ball around pretty weU all day and in the sec ond half we scored some excel lent goals. It was good to see Nene Danieu, Gwen Pacharis, and Christina McShain score, and Chris Webb looks to be getting back to top form.” The two wins left the team 7- 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the Dixie Conference.
