OCTOBER 4,1996 — THE DECREE — PAGE 7 Sports Lady Bishops soccer team wins Methodist Tournament By KAROLYN BRAUN The 1996 Lacrosse Club Team has more participation than in the past years. With a large number of freshmen playing, the team has organized a schedule which will help improve their strength. Freshmen members of the club are Ryan Smith, Randy Fairbanks, Steven Nunes, William Allo- mond, Fred Pfeil, Britton Sukys, Tim Petre, Allen Davis, Chad Cox, and GiGi Glen. The sophomores on the team are Will Parker, and Karolyn Braun. Jeff Vivenzio, Felicia Tho mas, RJ Fornaro, and Amy Brayton are the Junior members. The seniors of the team are David Driver, Nick Fairbanks, Andrew Malleck, H.D. Neale, and Grant Long. Club officers are President Amy Brayton, Vice President Karolyn Braun, Secretary Chad Cox, and Treasurer R.J. Fornaro. According to the tentative schedule, the club will host Ap palachian State at 2 p.m. on Sat urday. Wesleyan will host Fort Bragg on Oct. 19 and Old Do minion University on Oct. 20, both at 2 p.m. The club will travel to Wake Forest on Nov. 2 for a 2 p.m. game, then go to Fort Bragg on Nov. 3. The Battling Bishops women’s soccer team won the Methodist Tournament Championship last month by virtue of a 2-1 victory over Widener and a 6-0 win against St. Andrews. The Bishops outshot Widener 22-4 during the game, but found themselves down 1-0 at halftime. Freshman Jaime Funk evened the game with an unassisted goal early in the second half. The Bishops won the game in dramatic fashion as freshman Megan Sanderson headed home an Alyson Patrick comer kick with only six seconds remaining in the game. Senior Alyson Patrick only needed three shots to record the hat trick against St. Andrews. Patrick now leads the Bishop scorers with seven goals and one assist. Betsy Jones, Danyel Thomson, and Jaime Funk also added goals for the Bishops, who only allowed two shots the whole game. The tournament was a posi tive rebound for the Lady Bish ops, who earlier the same week suffered a tough 2-0 loss to Randolph-Macon College. Randolph-Macon scored both goals in the final ten minutes of the game. “This was an extremely disap pointing game for us,” said Head Coach Robert Donnenwirth. “It took us a long time to get going and Randolph-Macon was able to take too much momentum early.” The week before, the Battling Bishops began with a 1-1 tie at Virginia Wesleyan in a game which saw the Lady Bishops outshoot the Marlins 44-7. Alyson Patrick opened up the scoring in the first overtime, but the Marlins equalized the score on a goal which skidded off a Wesleyan defender in the wet conditions. The men’s soccer team lost 4- 3 to Guilford College in late Sep tember. After a scoreless first half, the Bishops took a 3-2 lead with two goals from Scott Kennell and one from Joey Bowman. The Bishops couldn’t hang on as Guilford scored two goals in the final seven minutes. “We let this one slip away,” said Coach Greg Vogel. “Mis- communication lost us the game.” The loss dropped the team record to 1-4. The previous week, the team “This was a disappointing game for us,” Donnenwirth said after the game. “Hopefully, we will learn that dominating two- third of the field isn’t enough. We have to finish our chances and be more tenacious in the box.” The Bishops did just that in their next game as they defeated Johns Hopkins 4-0 at home. The Bishops didn’t allow- a single shot on goal as freshman Alexa Kapetanakis scored her first two collegiate goals and senior Amy Coley scored a goal and added two assists. also dropped two soccer games, losing to Hampden Sydney, 40- 0, and Emory University, 3-1. The Battling Bishops gave na tionally ranked Emory (14th) a scare. The Bishops tied the score early in the second half and goal keeper Rob Simon and the Wesleyan defense kept the Eagles from equalizing until the 70- minute mark. “We played as hard as we could play,” Vogel said. “Follow ing our goal we had a number of chances to take the lead.” 1 GETTING READY — Ryan Smith gets ready for lacrosse prac tice.
