AMCO NEWS Vol. XX No. 2 Adams-Millis Corporation Feb. -Mar. , 1962 MEET YOUR SUPERVISOR Twenty-seven years ago, from deep down in Ran dolph County, Elmer Hoover came from the farm for his fir St job with Adams - Millis Corporation. He started with the Knitting Department at Plant # 2 on Grime s Street; and, after eight days as a knit ter learner, he was transferred to the English Street plant as a knitter on the HH machines. After attending Trinity High School, Elmer farmed for a few years with his father in Tabernacle Town ship in Randolph County, west of Hoover Mill Mine where the Hoovers settled when they came to America from Germany. Elmer's great grand father opened the Hoover Mill Mine where considerable mining for gold was carried on. Elmer's mother, be fore marriage, was Miss Millison Walker, whose family were also early settlers of Randolph County. In 1940, with six years of experi ence as a knitter, Elmer Hoover was promoted to fixing on the second shift. He advanced to the first shift soon. In 1943, whenathird shift was started in the knitting room, he was named supervisor of the third shift, advanc ing to the second and later to the first shift supervisor of the Piedmont knit ting room. In 1953, Elmer was placed in charge of all half hose knitting on English Street, including the NRP, Banner Wrap and SCOP machines. This additional responsibility involved moving many machines from one room to another. In 1959, when the Komet machines were moved from Grimes Street to the English Street plant and CKA machines were purchased. Hoover was named supervisor of all knitting machines which were placed on the second floor of Plant #1 upon the expansion of the plant. During this move, Elmer supervised the mov ing of more knitting machines than perhaps any other person has experi enced in many years. In 1933, Elmer Hoover married Miss Luna Morris, a graduate of Trinity High School, who had attended Woman's College of the University of North Carolina. She is a bookkeeper for Boulding Upholstery. They have one son. Van Hoover, who owns and operates the Cloverleaf Seafood Res taurant in High Point. The Hoovers are members of the Methodist Church and attend Main Street Methodist Church in High Point, where Elmer was secretary of the Willis Kirby Sunday School Class for three years. In 1967, they moved into their new home at 611 Woodrow Avenue where they now reside. Elmer is a member of the Indus trial Management Club of High Point.
