Elon Battles Apps
In Home Grid Tilt
The Elon Christians
will be at home for their
second straight grid bat
tle on Saturday night,when

tailback. Key men in the
defense will be David Oli-
phant, Ron Foresta and
Marty Bonnett in the

Lloyd Kanipe at a line
backer slot.
Everyone at Guilford
was anxious to see the
first game between Elon
and Guilford last Satur
day night, and Dr. Dan-
ieley even dreamed about
the outcome of that game
in advance. The fans are
even more anxious to see
this week’s battle with the
Appalachian Mountain
eers.
The Elon players them
selves like their “New
Look” single-wing of
fense. Co-Captain Lloyd
Kanipe feels that it is
more of a spectator type
offense, for fans can tell
where the ball is and bet
ter understand the plays.
Lloyd says the team has
more spirit and pep than
ever before.

taineers come down out
of high hill country for a
Carolinas Conference tilt.
The battle is set for 8
o’clock in Burlington Me
morial Stadium,
The Mounties have been
tabbed by the pre-season
prophets as the favorites
to grab the Conference
title this year, and they
have already gotten off
to a winning start, so
Coach Red Wilson and his
boys will face a rugged
test in this game.
Coach Carl Messere
can field no less than 26
letter veterans in the App
Black andGoldcolors,and
advance reports are that
he will use his veterans
in platoons to get full ad
vantage of their exper
ience.
The Elon gridders
boast 20 lettermen of
their own, and Coach Red
Wilson has been working
his outfit hard this week
and aiming for an upset
over the invading Moun
taineers.

The Fighting Christians
rode the passing arm of
Burgin Beale to a highly
pleasing 28 to 21 victory
over the Guilford Quakers
in the op2ning game of
Elon’s 1967 grid cam

the largest crowds in Elon

The Christians came

in the first seven minutes
on touchdowns by Mike
Hunt and Danny Wheeling.
The first Elon score came
on a 47-yard TD pass
from Beale to Richard
McGeorge, but the kick
failed and Guilford led
14-6 at halftime.
Joe Rinaca ran the tying
touchdown from the one in
the third period, and
Wright Anderson tossed
to Jim Waller to tie the
count at 14-all, but Guil
ford’s Henry McKay sun
ned Elon seconds later
when he took the kickoff
and sprinted 91 yards to
pay dirt to move the Quak
ers ahead 21 to 14.
It was then that the
Christians showed their
fight with two scores in
the final quarter. An 18-

George with a kick by
Lloyd Kanipe tied the
game at 21-all. Then,with

With Burgin Beale top
