Elon Nine Wins 3-0
In Otterbein Game
Catamounts Take Double Win
By JIM HODGES
In the first Conference
battles of the year for
the Christian baseball-
ers, Elon found herself
on the losing end of a twin
bill as the Maroon and
Gold nine went down to 3 to
I and 4 to 2 defeats here
on Saturday, March 29th,
Left Jim Ramsey was
touched for seven hits in
five innings of the first
contest, but excellent out
field play by Elon limited
the Catamounts to one run
during the span. Joe Rina-
ca and Mel Cliborne each
threw out runners trying
to score in the second
and third innings re
spectively.
The Cats finally scored
in the fourth on hits by
Bill Wofford and Steve
Barkley, and two more
runs crossed the plate in
the sixth off reliefer Keith
Brewer. Elon got its
single run in its half of
the sixth on doubles by
Jerry Midkiff and Cli
borne,
Four runs by Western
Carolina in the second
inning of the second con
test beat freshman Don
Oakes, who started on the
mound for Elon in that
game. Two walks and a hit
batsman, along with an
error, contributed to the
onslought.
Elon came back totally
twice in the fourth frame
on
an
hits by Rinaca and H.
Newcombe, along with
infield out by Bob
Godfrey and a sacrifice
fly by Cliborne,

Veteran Dewy Capps
thi'ew a three-hitter in his
first start of the season
as the Christian nine went
on to defeat the tourmg
Western Maryland nine
2 to 0 in a battle on the
Elon field on March 26th.
The Green Terrors got
a runner as far as second
base but once during the
contest on first-inmng
singles by Jerry Borga
and Joe Rudicille. The
only other hit for the Ter
rors was by Bill Getty
in the fourth. From there

Lefthander Joe Byrtus
teased and tantalized vi
siting Otterbein College
with a slow, slower and
slowest curve ball and
held them to but one hit
as the Christians came
through with a 3-0 win on
the Elon field on Friday,
March 28th.
Byrtus personally out-
hit the Cardinals, collect
ing two of Elon’s nine
safeties and batting in
one of the runs, with his
combined pitching and
hitting making him easily
the top man of the day.
The Christians scored
first in the fourth inning
on a bizarre turn of
events. Jim Friesinger
and Bob Godfrey led off
the inning with singles.
Then H. J. Newcombe
slapped one out to third,
with the third baseman
flipping to second to force
Godfrey, and a throw to
the plate nipped Friesin
ger trying to score.
It appeared that Elon’s
rally was stopped, but
then Rick Smith walked,
and there were runner s on
first and second. Dony
Brady hit a drive to left
center, scoring New
combe and Smith, but
on an appeal, the um
pire ruled that New
combe had not touched
third as he rounded it,
and only Smith’s run
counted, Elon later scor
ed in the seventh and
eighth on more convention
al plays.
