Don Brady, veteran catcher for the Fighting Chris tian baseballers, is now in his third season as a regular behind Ae plate in Elon’s diamond battles. Brady is 5-10 and 185-pounder from Bennett, who has proven himself a very fine receiver and a dan gerous hitter with men on the sacks. Brady played his high school ball at Chatham Central under the coaching of Ron Scott, himself a former Elon base- baller. It was a sec ond successive Confer ence win for Elon. Oakes, after having trouble in his first two mound starts of the year, relied on his fielders to get the Quakers out,for he did not get a single strikeout. However, he walked only two and scat tered ten Quaker safeties along the nine-inning route to claim the win. MILE RUN: Scott (E), Williams (SH), Corbett (E). Guilford With 2-1 By JIM HODGES Elon mound ace Dewey Capps tangled with Guil ford’s Edgar Parker in a pitching duel on the Elon field on April 19th, and Capps came out on the short end of a 2-1 score. Both pitchers hurled masterful ball, with hit ters of both teams feel ing the effects of the rainy spell and lack of batting practice. Capps gave up only three hits for the af ternoon, and Parker al lowed four. Oddlv enough, only one of the hits sur rendered by Capps came in the inning that beat him. The Christians put their run on the board in the fourth inning when Mel Cliborne singled sharply to left with two out. He stole second, and Joe Byrtus slapped a roll er to Quake second base man John Whittington, who threw wild to first baseman Bobby Chappell. Chappell retrieved the throw and tried to nail Cliborne, who was streaking for home, but Panther Nine Defeats Elon The High Point Pan thers wore their hitting shoes to Fairchild Parkin Burlington on April 22nd and used them to good ef fect as they banged out fourteen safeties on the way to a 13-1 win over the Elon baseballers in a night tilt. The Christians them selves could muster only six hits off High Point s Joe Kaub, sophomore mound ace, who coasted through the nine-inning route to victory. Jim “Bull” Ramsey, who started for Elon.was fagged with the loss after pitching less than three innings and getting relief from freshman Louis Ue- mott and sophs Steve Bird and Tom Jernigan. High Point had three men with three hits, and Joe Rina- ca had a triple and two singles for half of Elon s safeties. The line score; R. H. E. High Point. 13 14 1 Elon 1 ^ Kaub and Hickey; Ram sey, Demott (3), Bird (8), jlrnigan (8) and Brady. Gets Even Win Here the throw went through Catcher Jay Terrell to allow Cliborne’s score that put Elon ahead at 1-0. The Elon lead was shortlived, however, for the Quakers tallied two runs in the sixth on a single hit, using a walk and a tardy throw and sacrifice fly to aid the winning rally. The line score; R. H. E. Guilford 2 3 3 Elon 1 4 0 Parker and Terrell; Capps and Brady. Truth has only to change hands a few times to become fiction. If we make the best of little opportunities, we find ourselves more able to accept larger ones. The Elon defense com mitted four errors, but it came up with the play when it was needed, which proved highly pleasing to Co^ch Jerry Drake.Drake praised both infield and outfield for its play, point ing to a double play by Jerry Midkiff and Joe Byrtus in a crucial eighth inning that cut off a Quak er rally with two unearn ed runs. The Christian win came over Edgar Parker, Guilford’s ace lefthander, who proved disaster for the Elon nine last year. The Christians plated one run in the first and added two in the third to grab an early lead. There were singleton markers in the fifth and eighth and two final runs in the ninth. Joe Byrtus topped the Elon attack when he bang ed out two doubles and a single and accounted for three RBI’s during the fray, but Jim Friesinger and Mel Cliborne each came through with two safeties in a continued fight for the team bat ting leadership. The line score: R. H. E. Elon 7 10 4 Guilford 3 9 3 Oakes and Brady; Parker and Terrell. LINKER IS VERSATILE TRACKMAN Dan Linker, Elon sophomore who hails from nearby Greensboro, has proven himself one of the top per formers for the Elon College track squad during this 1969 season, which has seen the Christians undefeated in dual and triangular meets through April 21st.Linker has been a consistent double winner in both the shot and the discus throughout the season and has chalked some excellent distances.
