Page Four The Pendulum October?, 1976 Spor^ Nationally ranked Elon smashes Lock Haven 59-13; blanks Mars Hill 24-0 by Gary Spitler Sports Editor The Fighting Christians football squad has raised its record to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the SAC-8 to be one of three N.C. schools with an undefeated record. The other two schools are Catawba, of the SAC-8, and East Carolina. Elon was ranked 9 in the NAIA last week. The Christisins traveled to Lock Haven, Pa. to play a big game. The gridders scored a 59-13 win and had four other TD's called back because of penalties, so scoring was no problem for the Elon squad. Runningback Howard Ferguson exploded for 148 yards rushing in eight attempts, and scored four touchdowns to push Elon to a 59-13 decisive victory over the Bald Eagles of Lock Haven. Elon jumped out in front early when Lock Haven's Joe Brooks fumbled the ball on the opening kickoff. The Get involved in intramurals now by Julie Lackey The intramural program at Elon this year is attempting to offer the student body a greater variety of opportunities for athletic participation. The tag football season has been underway now for weeks with over 30 teams participating. The spirit and cooperation of these teams has been excellent, yet the rivalry grows tense as several of the undefeated teams will meet this week. This semester will also include racquetball and volleyball seasons. One new aspect of the program this year is a campuswide point system. Each organization is awarded a number of points for each winning team as well as each participating team. These points will be tallied for the entire school year with an all campus cup going to the organization with the most points. Awards will also be presented HOW* theyJ STANDJ the South Atlantic Conference W L 1. Catawba 2 0 2. Newberry 2 1 3. Elon College 1 0 4. Gardner Webb 1 1 5. Carson Newman 1 1 6. In the next series, the Bald Eagles pushed the ball down the field to set up their first score. The PAT was good and the Bald Eagles led 7-6. But that was the end of the Bald Eagles "attack." Howard Ferguson, Prince Deese and Alex McMillian led Elon's scoring efforts. Before the end of the first half, Ferguson galloped 76 yards for another Elon tally with only 26 seconds remaining. Then 14 seconds later, quarterback Nick derCola connected on a two-yard pass play to Keith Richardson to push the Elon score to 49-7 at the half. Kicker Mitch Rippy booted a 32-yard field goal in the third stanza for Elon's lone score. Lock Haven tallied another in the third on a 28-yard run by Joe Brooks. In the fourth period, quarterback Phil Beeson connected with Tom McKinnon on a seven-yard pass. Thus it ended Elon 59 — Lock Haven 13. The Christians entered SAC-8 play last week and came out on top with a 24-0 win. The gridders were held scoreless in the first period but Elon exploded and picked up steam as the game moved on. With 36 seconds remaining in the first half, quarterback Nick derCola connected with Jimmy Davis for a 23-yard touchdown pass. That was the only scoring in the first half and Elon went into the locker rooms with a 7-0 lead. In the second half, Elon got the ball rolling. Prince Deese scored from eight yards out and Mitch Rippy kicked the PAT to boost the score to 14-0. Then with 10:10 remaining in the contest Howard Ferguson threw a 72-yard TD pass to Roxie Bratton which was a total surprise to the Lions. Rippy's PAT was good and Elon led 21-0. Then with 8:15 left, kicker Mitch Rippy booted a 23-yard field goal to give Elon the 24-0 first conference victory. Elon 1-0-0 in the SAC-8 and 4-0 overall, will meet Wofford at Burlington this week for a homecoming game. Elon hosts Presbyterian the following week in a SAC-8 encounter in Burlington. Time is 2 p.m. for Elon and Wofford. I Quarterback Nick derC ola. Runningback Howard Ferguson to the season and tournament winners for each sport. A sports banquet will be held at the end of each semester for the presentation of these trophies. All intramural awards have been sponsored by Kris Domenick, of Kentucky Central Life Insurance Co. The program this year looks exciting and rewarding. Take a study break and get involved.
