MORRIS Head Football Coach 1st year at FSU College: Fayetteville State University (4-3-1 CIAA 4-4-1 overall) Location: Fayetteville, NC 28301. Nickname: ''Broncos'' Stadium: Bronco Sta dium, Capacity: 2,500. Head Football: Thomas R. Morris (1st year) Athletic Director John D. Marshall. Outlook: "Well, Eliza beth City runs a 4-3 defense, so we will stay pretty much with our regular offense," states 1st year mentor Thomas R. Morris. The Broncos have gotten off to a pretty good start against non-confer- ence city rival Ft. Bragg and CIAA contender St. Paul's College winning 12- 0 and 13-6 respectively. Norfolk State University, however, proved to be too much for the Broncos this year losing 20-0 at Norfolk. However, on November 1, 1980, Coach Johnny Walton and his multi-set pro offense comes to town. "We will be running the veer offense and for Elizabeth City I think our offense will be ready. It's not the fact that the kids don't know, it's just that they are young. We have a lot of sophomores and freshmen on that offensive line. It's just a matter of time until we jell into a good offensive line. Elizabeth City will be at their best when they throw the ball, that's whatthey do best. In the Elizabeth City State-Norfolk State game in Petersburg, VA (Fish Bowl), Norfolk rushed for over 300 yards total offense and Elizabeth City only had a little over 100 yards total offense. The strength of the Bronco squad lies in its strong defense. Only one starter on the defensive line was lost to graduation, so top returnees will include tackles, Barney Mason, Ernest Hawkins and Kenneth "Hir Man" Tillman. The defensive backfield is still solid behind Ernest Hackney and All-CIAA, NAIA, Ike Hall. H O M E C 0 M 1 N G Elizabeth City State University Pre-Game Outlook MR. JOHN WALTON Head Football Coach (1st year) 1 9 8 0 College: Elizabeth City State University — last year's record, (2-6-0, 3-7) Location: Elizabeth City, North Carolina 27909. Nickname: "Vikings " Stadium: Northeastern Stadium, Capacity- 5,500. Head Football: Mr. Johnny Walton (1st year) Athletic Director: Mr. Bobby Vaughan. Outlook: Elizabeth City State has a new coach at the helm in former Philadelphia Eagle, back up quarterback Johnny Walton who will eventually turn the Viking football program into a winning one. He must first select the Vikings Q.B. from Junior Ralph Eagleton and sophomore Ed Costley. Walton will install his own system at ECSU and maybe they will get on the right track. The Vikings' biggest problem will be getting the offense tuned up to run. All the offensive lettermen returned, with the exception of Dave Nickleson. New recruits, Darble Brown and Bobby Futrell will be the players to watch when the Vikings invade Bronco land on November 1. Also, watch for the new multi-set pro offense of Walton's gang. They may have problems executing it well, but it will be something to watch. Losing the key to their strongest offensive unit in 1979, was through the graduation of Fred Wilson, James Pugh and Laweret Adams, but top returnees will be a host of power runners led by senior, "Big" John Morris; Juniors, Gary Sneed and Danny Jones; and Sopho more Dudley White. Elizabeth City wiH go into this game with wins over Bowie State, Virginia State, Hampton Institute and Norfolk State — decisively. Virginia Union defeated ECSU, and at press time, the ECSU-St. Paul's and ECSU-N.C. Central games have not been played. Remember to watch that new multi-set pro offense.
