December, 1991 The Broncos' Voice Page 15 IT’S SO HARD TO BE A BRONCO text and photos by Heawatha Sanders As the 1991 Bronco football season comes to a close, disappointment reigns over the campus. There is a sigh of relief that it is over. "Most of the competition was just too competitive"...."! saw it coming after the first game"...."l knew it all the time," commented some of the students surveyed about the season. It seems that many had forecast this thunderstorm. Here’s a look at how the season went: Game 1 FSU(21) Carson Newman(44) Game 2 FSU(O) Howard (62) Game 3 FSU(6) Elizabeth City(21) Game 4 FSU(O) Elon(31) Game 5 FSU(8) Winston-Salem(28) Game 6 FSU(O) NC Central(14) Game 7 FSU(14) Virginia State(31) Game 8 FSU(O) JCSU(24) Game 9 FSU(O) Norfolk State(28) Game 10 FSU(9) Livingstone(34) If the average person was to look at the record and scores of this season, he may wonder what could possibly be said after a season like this to ease the frustration. However, if the same person was to look at statistics and personal gains, he may reply, "The best teams don’t always win." This statement could very well apply to the Bronco football team. There were nine(9) different players nominated for the CIAA player of the week and eight(8) of the nine(9) were selected to receive the prestigious award. Congratulations go to: #22-Kenneth Frazier(RB) - Best game: 117 yards, 1 TD; led CIAA in all purpose yards before injury. #3-Mark Macklin(LB) - Best game: 10 solo tackles, 3 assists, 1 fumble recovery. #5-Jessie Curtis(RT) - Best game: 77 yard kick-off return; ranked as- high as #4 in CIAA; became all-time return man for FSU. #42-Michael Edwards(DB) - Best game: 7 solo tackles, 4 assists, 4 pass breakups. #57-Foster Wilkins(DE) - Best game: 16 solo tackles, 4 assists, 1 sack for 7 yard loss. #56-Terrell Hill(LB) - Best game: 10 solo tackles, 4 assists. #27-Anthony Bennett(DB) - Best game: 5 solos, 2 assists. #20-Clifton Davis(RB) - Best game: 160+ yards. SUPPORT FSU ATHLETICS! Dream...for a winning team!! Top: The 1991 Bronco Varsity Cheerlead- ing Squad was with the Posse all the way. Bottom: Kenneth Frazier led the CIAA in all purpose yards gained. "The Bronco Posse is alive and well...." said Coach Lindsay. BOWLING TOURNAMENT A SUCCESS The students of Fayetteville State University displayed a great deal of enthusiasm in the recent Bowling Tournament. The event, held at the Rudolph Jones Student Center between November 11th and 14th, harnessed a total of 130 participants. Students who scored in the top ten (for males) and in the top eight (for females) bowled in the finals. Trophies were given to finalists who scored in the top five. In the male category the winners were: Trayer Frazier with 351, Pete Saunders with 327, Karster Ray with 326, Troy Wiggin with 321 and Harold Wiggins with 307. Females who scored in the first five places were: Lula Wiggins with 336, Andrea Jones with 303, Patty McCall with 293, Taffany Griffin with 262 and Albertine Jones with 253. - Gene Carroway Tyson Takes Lickin’ and Keeps on Tickin’ by Timothy Jessie Mike Tyson has been up to a lot lately, especially at the recent Indiana Black Expo which was held in conjunction with the 1991 Miss Black America Pageant in Indianapolis. Allegedly, he raped an 18-year-old contestant in room 606 of the Canterbury Hotel on July 19th. He also allegedly propositioned and "squeezed SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS the charmin" (.fondled the buttocks) of Rosie Jones, the 27-year-old 1990 Miss Black America. Currently, Mike Tyson is awaiting criminal prosecution on the former and is being sued for a hefty sum (SI00 million) on the latter. To make matters worse, v/hich is still possible, Ms. Natahe Fears has filed a $12 million paternity suit against the former heavyweight champion. She claims the boxer has failed to establish a $5 million trust for his 17-month-old illegitimate son, D’Amato Tyson, and provide $20,000 monthly child support, a luxury car and a house in Ohio. I can’t say much about the rape charge, but there’s one word screams out in response to Rosie Jones’ and Natalie Fears’ reparation demands - golddiggers! As the rap group EPMD said, someone had better break out the "jack hammer and the helmet that glows". However, these recent roadblocks for Iron Mike aren’t the big problem. His problems started years ago in Brooklyn when his family had to move; young Michael Gerard Tyson, a good kid and smart • student, had to change schools. He landed at P.S. 178 as a first or second-grader and has never been the same. TYSON, cont. on p. 16 ^risiiisi tU'f'i 8HBBF
