Cattle From Page 1 Broncos Voice November 1994 ready have, and, if they were lucky, they would get the same rooms and roommates they already had. Ok, so what are they going to do with the students they’re forcing out? Will they put them on one of the local hotels and shuttle them to campus? said they don’t have the means to move everyone back and forth.” I did a little calculation (all numbers are approximations). Calculating 200 dollars a month for room, times the 46 people the Department wants to displace, times 7 months, divided by 2 (2 people living in a room) The total came to 32,200 dollars, which seems to be more than covered by the $1,350 charge for a dormitory room for the semester. Students can even generate another $4,370 by using the $75 “breakage deposit” and $20 “dorm activity fee” students are charged (don’t ask me what for). The total 46 students put in for the semester using my rough calculations and a concern for the students is $66,470! Using school vehicles, (the buses and vans) I think the administration can pay someone to shuttle the students from the hotel to the school and back at 7:00am, 11:00am, and 9:00pm with the extra 34,270 dollars. Yet they expect the men of Bryant to take another student in their rooms with a rebate of only 233 dollars. I realize Dr. Ghee is not actively trying to harm us, and so I am sure he has allocated some funds specifically for preparing quarters for the stu dents, but I have not even calculated that money into the equation. “The repairs where obviously needed last summer, why weren’t they done? Why weren’t they done? Now, with Joyner collapsing, they want to get the renovations done quickly. Where were they when the Bryant ceil ing collapsed, when the third floor flooded, and the second floor collapsed through the first floor ceiling?” “Well, from what I understand, the money wasn’t allocated until after the University Bond Referendum was passed. Then the funds were held until the red tape and paperwork was processed. The contractor that was chosen to do the renovations says he cannot finish them by August, if he starts during the summer. “Then Dr. Ghee should get another contractor. It’s not a difficult prob lem.” “You’re getting off the subject,” I said. “The questions are.. ‘Is what they’re doing right?’ and ‘What can we do about it?’” “Well I know what I’m going to do. Ghee thinks we can do our work in those rooms with 3 people in them? I’ll just camp my butt in his office, and see if he can get his work done.” Our rooms are not only our bedrooms, but also our offices. But I don’t think that having every student with 3 people in his room go to Dr. Ghee’s office at least once a day to voice his discontent would solve the problem. It would make him aware of it though. He must not be aware of the prob lems he is causing, otherwise he, I am certain, would not act with such myopia. I wonder, though, if he is not aware that packing 3 men in a room ate Team Woidkon The ultimate that is not fit for 2 would cause problems, why is he in charge of student affairs? I voiced this to my partner, and, while he liked the idea of informing Dr. Ghee of our hardships on a daily basis, he agreed that more immediate measures were necessary to ensure that we would not have 3 people in our room next semester. Now, this is just an observation, but the only washing machines are on the North Side of Bryant, which is where Department of Student Life plans to move the women. The men of Bryant Hall will have a legitimate reason to find it necessary to frequent the North Side. There are 3 breezeways connecting the North Side to the South Side at all 3 floors. The staircases leading to all three floors are open, and without doors or locks. The secu rity of any women placed in Bryant is in serious question. It has been suggested that we simply not leave our rooms. It is not possible to tear apart an entire floor with people in it, especially when there are more students than others. It has been said that they do not have the money to pay someone full time to watch the students who stay on campus during vacation. I pointed out that I would be a perfect candidate, since I am a competent adult with no criminal record, and would be sure to watch myself vigilantly, letting no move go unnoticed. I’d do it all hours of the day, except when the subject was asleep, then I would catch some shut-eye myself, being certain to awake the moment I did. I’d even do it for free. Though I don’t see why an administration that can afford to buy new leather furniture for their offices cannot afford to pay someone minimum wage to watch a group of adults, some of whom have been watching themselves more than 30 years. I digress. I returned my attention to Rodney. “...That’s the problem, I think. The decision to renovate during the school year sounds very good to someone who does not have to live with his decisions. That’s the real problem here- Those making the decisions don’t have to live with them. I have to live with them. I’ll be making my own decisions from now on.” A peaceful solution is at hand. Now, knowing the complaint made, and the solution offered, the ball is now in Dr. Ghee and the Department of Student Life’s court. The solution is equable, equitable and equatable, the problem real, and the alternative... problematic. A Question of Safety? by Gamiliel Massenburg You sit in your lobby reading the The individuals only made off with paper or watching T.V. You have a $25 and a beeper. Although this sense of being secure due to the was a small number of loss and fortu nately no one was hurt, we should not overlook the - significance of this event. We are not safe here on this cam pus. Jesse Curtis feels that F.S.U., like St. Augustine College, Shaw University, and some other HBCU’s, should enclose our cam pus with a gate. Reopening the three information/security booths located on campus and adding one to the Langdon street entrance would also aid in securing our campus. Jesse said that he did not blame the police or anyone for what hap pened. He feels that such bold crimes as this can’t be predicted or prevented. Once a person has de cided to commit a crime, he will find a way, unfortunately. ...as you look up to see the barrel of a gun pointed towards you. people in the lobby and standing out side. Not _to mention the fact that its broad daylight. Despite all of this, you hear a sound you’ve heard be fore above your head. It’s a sound you find hard to convince yourself you heard because its the sound a gun makes as the hammer is cocked into its firing position. The disbe lief at what's happening is evident on your face as you look up to see the barrel of a gun pointed towards you. This is the sequence of events that took place on November 3, 1994 in the lobby of Vance Hall. Jesse Curtis, a member of F.S.U.’s football team, was boldly robbed while others looked on in disbelief.
