PHOTO: ROKIE THSLEr By BEN WILSON Q: Could you tell me a little bit about what your typical day is like? A: Well, I would say that I go from one meeting to another. I don't real 1y have a typical day, nor do I have a typical week. Months are typically typical. A lot of my work's off campus. I work with various groups like Economic Development Ccmnfvittee, Chamber of Comnerce, business and industries programs, and varioiis other comnittees representing the college. I usually have a monthly ccmnittee meeting of the Presidents' Association, and the presidents meet 4 times a year. We have an Administrative Council meeting typically about once a week. Once a month we have a camiittee from industries to tour the campus, board meetings every other month, and comnittee meetings prior to that. I have a lot of meetings with people here on carrpus, coordinating various aspects of college life. We are working on redoing the evaluation system for faculty and staff. I try to get in here and read my e-mail and I'm trying to do a little bit better job of keeping my desk clean. I try to spend as much time as I can walking around talking with students, faculty and staff. I stay busy. Q: Regarding your trip to Chicago, what was it all about and what concerns did trustees from other states express about their schools? A: The conference was the national meeting of the trustees association, which two of our trustees attended. It's funny; you talk to people from other states and they have the same problems. Budget concerns and various legal issues come up; They typically have some workshops where the trustees and presidents go. I went to one on implementing a diversity plan and another on how to market your accountability plan. Several speakers discussed topics such as the national government's intrusion into local administration. Q: Could you briefly discuss the awards you recently received? A: In the spring I received the award from NCEOP (North .Carolina Educational Office Personnel) here on canpus, as administrator of the year. I also received an award from NC State as an outstanding graduate. Q: ffhat are same of your goals for the 1994-1995 school year at Nayne Carmmity College? A: The nunber one priority we have right now is getting through the Southern Association Self Study. We've just about conpleted the self-study, and we are now in the process of responding to the recorrmendations. In April we will be visited by a team of 15 people. At that time we will have to respond to all their recomnendations, get all the information together they need to review our institution, and see how we meet the criteria. Q: fihat are the specific weakn^ses or strengths of woe? A: I honestly believe we have a good solid faculty and good curriculum programs. That's the key to the success of any institution. I don't feel that we have any significant weaknesses. Q: In regards to enrollment, what do you feel is the major reason for continued growth? A: Probably two factors are involved in continuing growth. First of all, we do a better job of marketing. We have contacted people to let them know what we have to offer. Secondly, I think people have recognized they need training beyond high school in order to get meaningful employment. A lot of students come here for the college transfer program that wouldn't have in the past, partly due to the college's good reputation and quality curriculum- i» Q: What is the fullest capacity for nimber of students in terms of parking, and is parking going to be sufficient for continued growth? A: We have enough parking. It's not the kind of parking I'd like to have in terms of paved lots. We will, with the new buildings, do some more paving. We are now working on the master plan, which should be corpleted some time after the first of the year. This should reveal to us how much parking we really need for now and the near future. Q: Do you feel there should be a greater enphasis on sports at Wayne Carmmity College? A: I think we do pretty well with the nurhber of programs we offer, although we don't offer as much as a traditional four-year institution. I think we need to keep a proper balance. The main function here is to train people for jobs and to prepare them for transfer to a four-year college. Q: What do you feel are the main disciplinary problems at woe and what is your role in the solution of these problems? A: Corrparing our institution to others, we really haven't had very many disciplinary problanns. Most of the problems we've experienced have been brought from off campus. For the most part our students are well behaved. There have been isolated cases of problems, but overall I feel that if you treat people fairly and things still get out of hand, they've got to go. Q: What new programs are you anticipating? A: We are studying that right now, and always looking for new programs. We have a new program for our Business Department called medical transcription \:hat I hope will be approved by the State Board this year. We are also looking at a medical lab technician program. We hope to have an application conpleted by this spring. We hope to offer both these programs by next year. I feel that we need to continue adding programs to the institution because students have varying interests. /— In Memorium This Issue of the "Campus Voice" is dedicated to the memory of WCC student and former "Voice" reporter, Patrick Humphries, who died in an automobile accident last May.
