Fordham crowned
Miss WCC 1995

Rebecca Fordham, the
new Miss WCC, was
crowned on April 27
before an audience of
about 250 in the
Lecture Hal 1.
Fordham said of her
win: "I feel honored to
be chosen."
Five contestants
competed for the Miss
WCC title: Sonja Smith,
Jennifer Grady,
Elizabeth Thomas,
Rebecca Fordham, and
Shelley Viault.
The contestants
performed in song and
dance for the audience:
Sonja Smith sang,
"Jesus, I Call Him
Lord" while using sign
language; Jennifer
Grady sang "Further
Still"; Elizabeth
Thomas san^ a rousing
rendition of "Ring Them
Bells" followed by
Rebecca Fordham*s
medley '^urt So Bad"
and O’ ’• Of My
Heac
Shelley Viault
performed a modern
dance to the song "Via
Dolorosa."
Before the
announcement of the
winner and the
coronation ceremony,
Karen Lee, "Miss WCC
1994," gave a final
farewel1.
The judges' decision
resulted in these
awards: Shelley Viault
received the interview
award and Miss
Congeniality, Sonja
Smith was Second
Runnerup, and Elizabeth
Thomas was the First
Runnerup.
Fordham is currently
pursuing an Associate
of Fine Arts degree
from WCC.
She aspires to use
her voice in Music
Therapy or Voice
Performance in her
future after completing
a 4-yea? degree.
Math Department sponsors
annual contest

The Mathematics
Department at WCC
sponsored its 17th
annual Mathematics
Contest on March 30,
1995.
The purpose of the
contest is to reward
junior and high school
mathematicians for
their skill and to
encourage them to
achieve their math
goals.
Representing 31
schools, 198 students
came from as far away
as Charlotte for the
contest according to
Jeanne Carreras,
secretary of the Math
Department.
The schools were
grouped into 2 teams--
Algebra 1 and Compre
hensive.
Algebra I winners
consisted of 4 teams:
Greensboro Day, Spring
Creek, Elm City, and
Hunter Creek.
Comprehensive
winners were Enloe,
Chapel Hill, Athens
Drive, and Apex High
Schools.
Awards were also
presented to the top 4
individuals in the
Algebra I and
Comprehensive tests.
The school with the
overall best score for
Algebra I was Wayne
County's Spring Creek.
For best
Comprehensive scores
Wayne County's Rosewood
High took the award.
Door prizes
consisted of T-shirts
and calculators donated
by Casio and vendors.
The Foundation of
WCC supported the
effort through a mini- .
grant which Math
Department members used
to meet expenses.
