Eight students vie in Apollo Show MAY 1. 2002- WCC CAMPUS VOICE 17 By CHRISTOPHER S. POPE and REGNELLE swmsoN To celebrate Black History Month, the Multi-cultural Association for Enrichment (MCAE) at Wayne Community College sponsored its annual version of the Apollo Show on Tuesday, February 28,2002, in Moffatt Auditorium. In the WCC production, 7 performers sang and 1 played the piano with 3 students emerging as first, second, and third place winners: Ahmad James won $75 for his rendition of “How Great Thou Art”; Uvette Johnson, $50 for the song, “The Battle Is Yours” ; and Jannel Orr, $25 for “All the Man I Need,” performed a capella. The club’s treasury and a $1.00 admission fee provided the cash prizes for the talent show, according to Janice Fields, Counselor in Student Development and co-adviser of MCAE with Norma Dawson, Coordinator for the Career Center. Judges for the event included Quentin Wade, Director of Human Resource Development in Continuing Education; Michelle Hines, Coordinator of Human Resource Development, also in Continuing Education; and Carl Brow, Counselor in Student Development. Amateur performers had an opportunity in 1935 to display their talents at the Apollo Theater erected in 1913 in New York City. The theater was the setting for such famous performers as Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Nat “King” Cole, Lionel Hampton, and Sammy Davis, Jr. The Apollo closed in 1975 but re-opened in 1981 when Amateur Night was resurrected as well. In the 1980s, an Act of Congress declared the theater a national landmark. Unidentified students perform during the Apollo Show. Bonds from p. 1 For example, art students may do the interior decoration, or turf grass technology and forestry students may help with the landscaping. The center allows the staff, faculty, and students of WCC and Wayne Memorial Hospital the first openings. Then any other openings will be available to the general public. Financial assistance is available for parents going to school and paying for childcare. Ritt said this n^w facility would help children leam and grow in a loving and caring environment. Workers and children will be able to concentrate on the tasks they are doing. The center will be closer to WCC’s campus located on the right side of the campus diagonal to the parking lot.
