Foundation provides for scholarships, cultural events BiAY 1. 2002 - WCC CAWUS VOICE 9 By CYNTHIA WENDELL and PAT BRESHEARS The Foundation of WCC presented the following activities during the spring semester of 2002 in its joint efforts to raise funds for student scholarships and to enhance cultural life on campus and in the community. Lectures included Dr. James Leutze, historian and Chancellor at UNC-Wilmington discussing the Battle of Gettysburg; Dwane Powell speaking about his work as an editorial cartoonist; and Dr. J[ames Tabor lecturing on excavations in Jerusalem. Also, the Foundation of WCC underwrote some of the expenses for the plays “Crimes of The Heart” and “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” Performing groups like the Creative Motion Theater [see related story pg 26] appeared on campus as a result of mini-grant support. The Foundation also sponsored Tales from Ovid, a course on Roman Mythology, and trips to Gettysburg, PA, as a follow up to Leutze’s lecture, and a tour to Greece and Italy, which Dr. Bill Brettmann will direct. The Foundation’s greatest fundraiser of the semester was “A Tribute to Trautwein,” in honor of George Trautwein, former choral director at Goldsboro High School. The event brought together alumni of Goldsboro High School who had sung in choruses Trautwein had directed from 1956tol969. The black tie event included performances by Ray Bunch, who wrote the musical scores for the HBO/Showtime movies such as “What Girls learn” and numerous other TV and theatrical shows. The Foundation has provided 301 scholarships during the fall and spring semester of 2001 and 2002, a total amount of $164,019.50. The Foundation office is located in room 145, the first floor of the Dogwood Building on the campus of WCC. On June 18^’’ and 19th, Wooten Oil Company will be the . sponsor for the WCC Benefit Golf Scholarships tournament, which provides scholarships for full-time students with a GPA of at least 2.5. Endowment and Annual scholarships are another option for students to choose from. Students can apply for scholarships in the WCC Financial Aid office on the first floor of the Learning Center. Scholar provides Insight about world crisis By PAT BRESHEARS and SARA KENNEDY On Thursday, January 24, at 7 p.m., in the Moffatt Auditorium at Wayne Community College Dr. Sara Shields spoke before an audience of 200 people, including high school, college students, local educators, and the community. She started off with a question under debate. What will it take to achieve peace in the Middle East? Shields was the first speaker in a World View lecture series at WCC. Dr. Sandra McCullen gave the introduction and recognized the Eastern Wayne High School World View class was among the audience. PHOTO: SARA KENNEDY She said the World View class at Rosewood High School is planning a trip to Amsterdam. Shields gave an outline of her lecture and said she would give her version of the Arab- Israeli conflict, try to make it understandable, and respond to any question at the end. Dr. Shields had 2 major goals in her lecture: the first, to understand the past, and second, to realize that sources matter. Shields began with the 1880s in Europe when the French were experimenting with democracy and socialism. Nationalism made Jews confront their “separateness” and persecution from Europe. George Trautwein, left, greets Tommy Gibson, a former student, before a rehearsal for "A Tribute to Trautwein.’* “While they were enjoying an emancipation,” said Shields “they were still being persecuted.” The Zionists viewed Jewish separateness as a vital means to maintain their identity. If women of the country would take a stand against the violence in Israel, then a swifter agreement of peace would arise, she said. Shields charged that the leaders are committed to violence, but the people are committed to peace. “Israel’s long term survival cannot be achieved through military means. Only peace will assure Israel’s survival.” In the question and answer session, WCC instructor Ray Brannon asked what kind of infrastructure would be needed to support a two nation state. Wells 919-778-9523 5648 US 70E Shields responded that Israel would need the help of the international community: The problem, she said, is that the infrastructure is being destroyed daily. Some members of the audience challenged her as being biased, while others defended her claims of being “a Jew and a pacifist.” Dr. Sara Shields ^itCage- Irader 5648 US 7(m 778-51Z1 ViCCage Qreen SpecicUiy Sliops 14K GOLD & DIAMOND CHAINS & CHARMS REPAIR & SPECIAL DESIGN & REMOUNTS JiZWijIry Qnlimitizd AN EXTRA 10%^ I OFF WITH I ^ STUDENT ID J Frankie & Anita Walker 919-736-3472 Goldsboro, NC WAL-MART SHOPPING CENTER (919) 751-3899 (919) 751-5104 TOLL FREE 1-800-330-0425 J
