Albee started by relating his experiences as an actor in college. As a result of harsh criticism of his acting and his continued interest in drama, he switched to playwrit ing during his third and final semester of college. His first play, The Zoo Story came out in 1959. After tracing his development as a director of his own and some other well known plays, Albee surrendered the stage to a pair of student actors who performed a scene from The Zoo Story. After this inspired and unusual event, he answered the actors' ques tions and made some comments of his own. He said the actors, Tom Abrams and David Brown, had a good sense of the characters but revealed that he had made some adaptations to the play because of changing times. His critique as a director was very professional; at one point, he even talked about "the playwright's intensions'' as if he was referring to someone else.
