Watchdog group plans for year
PIRG sponsors mock caravan,
Students from Guilford Coi
lege, Duke University, and the
University of North Carolina at
Greensboro (UNC-G) will be
sponsoring a "mock nuclear
waste caravan" on Friday,
Sept. 28, to attend the Barnwell
II Energy Fair and Rally. Barn
well, S.C., is the home of three
nuclear facilities.
The caravan will be originat
ing near the UNC-G campus for
a news conference to discuss
the problems surrounding the
transport of radioactive wastes
through Greensboro and North
Carolina.
The caravan will then move to
northeast Greensboro along US

route, to leaflet the neighbor
hoods that lie adjacent to the
highway, informing the resi

Why go to Munich next
semester?
If an introductory science
course, advanced physics, Ger
man history, German art his
tory, a political science course
dealing, with the East/West
political situation, introductory
or advanced German, are in
your fall semester plans, then
for only the regular price of a
semester at Guilford, and an
additional two-hundred and fif
ty dollars, you can take a
semester in Munich, Germany;
and take all these courses.

All the courses offered meet
core curriculum requirements.
Classes will be set up for
Monday, Tuesday, and Wed

the student may do as he or she
so desires. Rex and Pat Adel
berger should lead the group.
Classes will be held at the
Universityof Munich. Housing
will be with German families,
and they will provide students
with breakfast only. The stu
dents will be given a weekly
allowance so that they may
purchase for themselves the
rest of their meals.

Make your plans for 1980
Although the housing is scat
tered throughout Munich, there
is a very efficient subway
system which will bring a
student right to the university.
In addition to Professor Adel
berger there will be several
German professors. They will
be teaching the history, and
political science courses. All
classes, except for German, will
be taught in English.
The group is tentatively set to
leave around September 1980
Professor Adelberger prefers to
have classes straight through
December, omitting a fall
break. The advantage is that
finals will be over by the first of
December The rest of the time
can be spent touring Europe at
one's own discretion. Everyone
will return together.
There will be several planned
excursions, one to Berlin. Stu
dents will be allowed to enter
the occupied, eastern portion of
the city. For many this will be
the first excursion into a com
munist country.

quired, but taking basic Ger

Guilford hosts PIRG board meeting
On Sunday, Sept. 16, Guil
ford College played host to the
first NC PIRG State Board
meeting of the 1979/80 year.
Students from PIRG chapters
across the State attended; these
included Duke, Elon, Davidson,
Wake Forest, and Guilford Col
lege.
The Guilford PIRG chapter
was represented by Meg Horton
and Suzanne Sullivan, co-State
Board representatives. Also at
tending the meeting from Guil
ford were Bill Des Jardins and
Mary Ann Cochran.
After the introduction of
three new staff persons, two of
whom, Art Donsky and Elisa
Wolper, work out of the local
PIRG office on the second floor
of Founders, the discussion
turned to the approval of the
library in Munich which stu
dents may use.
Good grades aren't a major
critera for being accepted in-to
the program. Adelberger said,
"I'd rather have someone with
poor grades but an intense
desire to see Germany, then
someone with straight A's, and
isn't sure why they are going."
Adelberger prefers to have
registration completed by the
end of the semester so that he
can start having informal meet
ings to discuss what to bring,-
the exchange rates, and other
information about the program.
Emphasis is not just on the
course material. Stress will be
to live the things that are
learned in the classroom. Adel
berger encourages independent
study because it allows one to
venture out into the community.
Anyi ie interested in going
may obtain information from
Professor Adelberger Ext. 279,
or from the Center for Off
Campus Education located in
Frazier Apt. #2l.
