Housing lessens tension in Binford
By Roger C. Pettingell
Staff Writer
About two weeks ago trouble
began in Binford Hall. Non-
Cuilford males were found
roaming Binford's Halls and
several girls reported that one
male entered their rooms while
they were sleeping. One girl
was about to shower when a
male visitor sneaked in the
bathroom. That same night he
was also seen in rooms in Mary
Hobbs.
Binford's coordinators, Carey
and Julie Ritmeester, called the
police. It was agreed that the
police would be called again if
any of the peeping toms were
seen again. Days later the
visitors returned. This time
three of them were caught.
The man who entered the
bathroom was arrested, and all
of them were ordered never to
return to Guilford's campus.
One of the visitors was sched
uled for trial for armed robbery,
and another had been charged
with rape, yet had gotten off on
a technicality.
This chain of events led to
some security changes in Guil
ford's women's dorms. Binford
Hall made the first move since
most of the trouble has hit
them. Binford is the largest
female dorm on campus, and it
is easily accessible from College

Spain. Subjects discussed in
class will be coordinated with
field trips. A study of the Arabic
influence in Spain will be fol
lowed up by a trip to southern
Spain. Discussions of Spanish
painters will be in conjunction
with a trip to the Prado.
"Spanish Conversation" is
not just a conversation course.
It will include a development of
the Spanish language as well as
its colloquial expressions. The
final for this course, which is
taught by Maritza Almeida, will
involve an actual talking situ
ation .
For instance, a student will
have to participate in the buying
of an article from a store, or
actually registering at a hotel.
Classes will be held in the
hotel where the group will be
Rd.
The girls had meetings and
passed around a ballot which
included the following:
1. The three wing doors be
locked at 9 p.m. All visitors will
enter through the front door.
2. Off campus men will be
required to show identification
and sign in.
3. If the nature of the visit
seem suspicious off campus
men will be escorted to the
room of the individual by the
individual or the desk tender.
4. Guilford students will be
allowed to enter without signing
in. If a male student is not
recognized by the desk tender
he will be asked to show his ID.
5. Any visitor or resident
would be allowed to leave by
any exit.
6. The check-in system will
operate between the hours of 9
p.m. and 1 a.m.
The girls voted to impose
security on themselves by a 3/4
majority 91-28. Bob White has
assisted the girls by using
work-study students on Friday
and Saturday nights. Monday
through Thursday each floor is
responsible for one week of
covering the door. This works
out to be about an hour every
week for each girl.

staying. There will be two hours
of class in the morning followed
by afternoon trips to museums.
Breakfast will be provided for
by the hotel. The program also
includes lunch, but dinner will
have to be purchased by the
students.
