There is an amazing amount of in formation and even more disinformation floating through the student body right now. It is easy to respond angrily. Most of the students at Guilford have developed close relationships with at least one of their profes sors. The students who feel secure and happy here do not want to see the community disrupted. It seems that the Guilford commu nity which we love can never be the same. Through all of these changes, it is important that the student body remember three things: 1. DONT PANIC. Change is a part of life. Sometimes change can be unfortunate. But we have to remember that this process has just started. It is possible that Guilford can come out of this tur moil even stronger than it was be fore. Of course, it also may be the Forum disaster that so many are predict ing. But we do not have enough information right now to decide. 2. STAY INFORMED. The first night after Don McNemar's new plan for Guilford was announced, students already were predicting exactly which professors were go ing to be laid off, some names pro nounced angrily and others listed with glee. Rumors such as these can be dangerous. No one, including Don McNemar, knows any names of any professors that are going to be laid off at this point in time. If you really care about Guil ford, do not sit around and com plain that your favorite professors are not going to be here anymore. Find out the facts as they devel ope. The paper will help you with that to the best of our ability. We are doing the best we can to re port the facts we know in the most unbiased manner possible. 3. MAKE YOUR OPINION KNOWN. That does not mean Continuing Education and a Second Chance It was high noon on August 7th when I got the dreaded phone call. I had been rejected for re-ad mittance to UNC at Asheville. I was sure that life itself was over. I had a mental picture of my self emptying garbage cans for the rest of my life, or worse, gazing angrily over three feet of ma hogany at the sea of drunks I'd come to know as my second fam ily over the past three years. A pretty grim outlook for only be ing 23 years old. When my mother's boss, the dean of college transfer at Forsyth Technical Community College, suggested the CCE program at Guil ford, my thoughts were, "Great, another red tape admissions pro cess!" In retrospect, I see that my notions were ill-conceived and state-university-biased. Not all schools have a general disinterest in giving students a second chance. From my first phone contact with Charlotte Hamlin to my next day meeting with Jeff Prince, all BY KELTON G. COFER staff writer The Guilfordian September 5,1997 spray painting on buildings or sit ting in your dorm room telling your roommate why you hate the entire administration. Anyone who has been around Guilford for any period of time should know that people will talk to you. You may feel like people do not listen to you. Maybe they don't. But if you talk to someone in telligently and respectfully, you may have some influence. It couldn't hurt. Once again, the newspaper can help you. You can write a let ter or an editorial. You can write news articles about what's going on and help inform the student body. We are here to provide a means of communication for the Guilford community. Withhold your judgement on what is happening right now. It could be a good thing or a bad thing for the community we care about. Do what you can to ensure that it is a change for the better. the way to registration, the whole process took a little over a week. All unfamiliar territory to a per son used to dealing with the "don't know, don't care" policy of the state system. The CCE department had my ball rolling from day one. No one ever held my hand but rather pushed me in all the right direc tions. They actually wanted to see me in class and on track by Au gust 26th. The day Jeff Prince called me to tell me I'd been accepted, one particular quote of his comes to mind, "We went to bat for you, Kelton. Don't screw it up!" Yoda couldn't have said it better him self. I owe the CCE department a great deal, not a six-pack, not a slap on the back; I owe them my future. When no other college would touch me, Guilford em braced me. With all the depart ment has done for me, the very last thing I intend to do is "screw it up!"
