New caf director has lofty goals ♦Brad McNeely hopes to improve the food in Guilford's cafeteria BY ELLEN YUTZY Staff Writer Last week, posters all over campus asked the question, "Tired of the caf, already?" Brad McNeely's job is to insure that your answer is "No." As Guilford's new cafeteria manager, McNeely is responsible for pro viding menus and giving students more of what they want. The job isn't necessarily an easy one. Of the money students pay each semester to attend Guil ford, only $1,242.00 per student goes towards food service, accord ing to the Enrollment Handbook. Despite the fairly small budget, McNeely has lofty goals. He wants to provide students with more va riety and better food. He says stu dents at Guilford have a new caf eteria director because, "They needed one Guilford got stuck in a rut." McNeely's goal is to change the cafeteria and his first prior ity is to improve the quality of the News food. He knows that students want bigger glasses and plans eventually to accommodate that. Meanwhile, he would rather serve more pal a t - able food and let stu dents continue using several glasses per meal. W± McNeely seems to believe that the cafeteria is al ready better than last year, students are less optimistic about the changes already made in the cafeteria. That is if they have even noticed the changes. First-year student Victoria Savery admits, "It's bet ter than when I visited last year, but still not great." Savery lists the improved salad bar as her fa vorite thing in the cafeteria. Sophomores Karl Borne and Todd Rainville agree that little has changed. The biggest improve ment Borne sees? He didn't real ize until this year that there was a sandwich machine which makes "cheese toastees." He was devour ing several "toastees" last week at lunch. Rainville complains that Art Gallery to hold Scanga exhibition Internationally-acclaimed art ist Italo Scanga will display more than forty of his most recent paint ing at an exhibition at the Art Gal lery. The exhibition will remain on view through Tuesday, September 23, weekdays from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays from 2-5 p.m. Born in Calabria, Italy, Scanga is a prolific artist that works in the full sectrum of media. FROM STAFF REPORTS The Guilfordian September 5, 1997 there hasn't been any chocolate milk this year. He was enjoying two bowls of Lucky Charms for lunch. Many students pass up the food in the hot line to eat basic sandwiches and cereal. Is this representative of the student body that McNeely envisions eat ing baked fish and London broil? Whatever your feelings on the Guilford cafeteria, McNeely is eager to please. He has family ties to the Greensboro area, and, in fact, is related to Guilford's own Mary Hobbs. He is happy to be at Guilford, which is slightly smaller than Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, where he worked before coming here in early June. Comment cards are available in the cafeteria. McNeely wants to know what you think. ings on display at Guilford will in clude "Cubism," a small painting in jewel tones of blue, red and gold, combining images representing an African sculpture, a fractured gob let and an Italian cypress tree. Scanga is Professor of Fine Arts at the University of Califor nia, San Diego. He immigrated to the United States in 1946, at the age of fourteen, and his work has been included in more than two hundred solo and group exhibi tions. Chris Snyder
