The Guilfordian September 5,1997 Record-breaking fund-raising year ♦College breaks records in both the Loyalty Fund and overall giving BY FRED WILLIAMS Staff Writer The total amount of money given to the college in the 96-97 fiscal year was $6,849,344. This compares with $6,015,313 in 95- 96, and only $4,386,963 in 94- 95. Overall, Guilford received more money this year than in any other in its 160-year history. An important factor in this banner fund-raising year was the Loyalty Fund, which includes current unrestricted funds given by alumni, parents, friends of the college, corporations, and foun dations. This fund reached over a million dollars for the first time ever. It totaled $1,001,587, com pared with $939,540 in 95-96, and $790,720 in 94-95. ' advancement, and his coworkers Carolyn Moore, who works on gifts of over a thousand dollars, Leslie Daisy, who runs the phonathon, and many others, there would be a million more dollars needed to run the college that would eventually come out of student tuition. President McNemar de scribed the 1996-97 fiscal year as ending with "record-breaking fund-raising accomplishments" in his president's annual report. This great financial success for the college was a result of many factors. One large increase in the loyalty fund revenue was a re sult of 20 individuals joining the Nathan Hunt Society. This orga nization is comprised of those who give SIO,OOO or more to the college. Another reason for the phe News nomenal increase in giving was a result of a revamping of the or ganizations involved with seek ing out donations to the college. Art Gillis, chief financial officer, stated in his annual report that, "Throughout the year the offices responsible for financial affairs of the college were engaged in self-studies, staff interviews, and task documentation —setting down the nature and responsi bilities of all operations and es tablishing priorities." When asked what he would attribute Guilford's fund-raising victory to, Soenksen complimented President McNemar's work to acquire money for the college. "Alumni, parents, friends, and other do nors responded to Don's leader ship in his first year as president" said Soenksen. Robichaux to resign BY MARJORIE HALL News Editor John Robichaux, chosen last semester to be Secretary of Com munity Senate for the 97-98 school year, has announced that he plans to submit his resignation at the first Senate meeting on September 10.
