14 Ultimate Team Splits in Two ♦Women's Team Founded to Fill Popular Demand BY JOHN CLINTON Staff Writer Since the start of the fall season, the Guilford Ultimate team has been coping with the unexpected influx of new play ers. Over 100 students signed up to join the club, and cur rently, an average of 50 are coming out to the practices. This increase has somewhat confused the team's organiza tion, as last year's club hardly exceeded 35 members. However, last week a solu tion granted clarity to this prob lem. The women will initiate a club of their own. They have dubbed themselves "George's Foxes"-a witty pun on the name of the founder of Quakerism. Susan Allen, the only re turning senior woman to this year's ultimate squad, was cho sen as the Foxes' president. She wants to relay her enthusiasm to the rest of the community. "In the past there has been one or two women, max, with about five or six last year. We had fif teen last night at our big meet ing, and a good core of women are coming out to the practices. It is a wonderful opportunity to play a great sport and to be a part of something new," said Allen. Sophmore Robin Olip-Booth is supportively critical of this change. "Well, I think that it is going to be less intimidating for some people to p1ay...1 also think that the ultimate team is going to lose a lot; one of the greatest things about Guilford Ulitimate was that it was a co ed team, and that most of the ultimate teams were not." It is apparent that Olip-Booth will miss the challenge of playing against men, who in her eyes were, "probably faster, stron ger, and taller" than herself and some of the other female play ers. Bill Blevins, the president of the men's team, is optimistic about the new branch of Guil ford Ultimate. "They are going to grow so much...practicing as hard as they always have. When they come into the co-ed games they will be ten times stronger than they were before," said Blevins. If you are curious about ul timate and are ready to have an excellent time as you play your hardest, then perhaps you should partake in this 'under ground' sport that is gradually increasing in momentum here at Guilford. The men and women both practice on Mon day, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, at 3:30 p.m. on the athletic fields behind the 'modi fied' Frazier/Dana apartments. Sports Fearless Forecast OK, 5-4 isn't that great. It's a beginning-of-the-year slump. We promise, we'll do better this week. North Carolina (-13) over Stanford: The Tar Heels burned us last week, but we're confident it won't happen again. Stanford's ranking is based solely on a bowl win over Michigan State last year, and Carolina is going to prove they're a top-10 team. Colorado (+1) at Michigan: Colorado really is better than people are giving them credit for. They won't need a last-minute Hail Mary this time. Northwestern (-17) over Duke: Never, ever pick Duke. They've got almost all their defen sive starters back, but it's from a team that went 0-11. Washington (-23) over San Diego State: OK, so we're giving in to the hype on this one. We'll take Wash ington. Miami (-9.5) over Arizona State: Last year is over for the Sun Devils. Butch Davis has Miami on the way back to prominence, and they haven't even had any play ers arrested this year! Clemson (+2.5) over N.C. State: State is 2-0, but they've beaten an overrated Syracuse and a Division 11-caliber Duke. Take the Tigers, even though the game is in Raleigh. Maryland (+33) against Florida State: The Terrapins aren't as bad as they showed last week, but then again, neither are the Seminoles. Maybe FSU will have mercy. Wake Forest (+l3) against ECU: The Demon Deacons are much improved. ECU is not as good as they were last year. Recipe for an upset, or at least a closer game than is expected.
