JUNE REID JO HOLLER June Reid and Jo Holler Will Present Joint Recital The School of Music will present Miss Josephine Ann Holler mezzo- soprano, and Miss Juno ^''^abeth Reid, pianist, in a joint graduating recital, Monday night, Al-ril -9, at eight o’clock in Memorial Hall. Miss Holler is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Holler of San ford, North Carolina. She studud her first three years at Salem with Mr Clifford Bair, and her senior vear with Mrs. Krne«t Starr. Her sophomore year she sang the role of Nancy in the operetta _ BLTJE- EABD, and she has been singing in the early morning chapel services for three years. Besides being a member of the In ternational Eelations Club and the German Club, she is one of the outstanding soloists of the Choral Ensemble. Miss Holler soloist for Christmas vespers this past year. . lie was also at one time a member ot the Episcopal church choir. Miss Beid is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles T. Beid of Virginia Road, Winston-Salem, North Caro lina. She has studied for four years with Dr. Charles G. Vardell, Jr.; and before beginning her college work, she was a pupil of Miss Har riet Greider, a member of the School of Music Faculty. One of the prominent members of the senior class, Miss B«id has been active musically as well as otherwise at Salem. This year she was president of the German Club, and for the past two years she has been accompanist for the Choral Ensemble. Her name is on the Dean s List, and she has received Class Honors all three years at Salem. Miss Beid has been on the legis lative board of the Student Govern ment, the Y. W. C. A. Cabinet, and was Music Editor of the Salemite in 1944. She was in the cast of the opera “HANSEL AND GBETEL” and she accompanied for the oper etta BLTJEBEABD. She sang in the chorus of the Piedmont Festival presentation of MABTHA, and was one of the accompanists for the DAUGHTEB OF THE BEGIMENT. In addition she is a member of the Tnternational Eelations Club. Hayes of Charlotte and a pupil of Dr. Charles G. Vardell, Jr., was presented by the Salem College School of Music in her graduating piano recital. Tliroughout the program Miss Hayes’ playing showed a well-de veloped technique and a definite aptituile for ‘interpretation, but her most valuable assets as a pianist are the possession of a wide dy namic range and the abilit.v to use it effectively. She made the most of her opportunities for big tonal effects, notabl.y in Brahms’ “Bap- s.ody in B Minor” and in the “Var iations Symphoniques” of Cesar Franck. The achievement of vol ume without sacrifice of quality made such high spots of the pro gram especially convincing. On the other hand, the more lyric portions of these works, to gether with the Bachmaninofl “Prelude in G Plat Major,” ex emplified Miss Hayes’ ability to be equally impressive in a less spectacular way. It was indeed a pleasure to hear melodies emerge with clarity enhanced by a skill ful and subtle handling of their tonal and rhythmic values.
