Dear Editor, The interview with Bill Talbert last week was in teresting, but not very in formative. Many questions remain to be answered concerning the hiring, training and evaluation of security guards. With regard to hiring, the men are hired based on their past record, their character and their dependability. Most of the men, according to Mr. Caudle, chief of security, are usually known by someone here on campus. The physical qualifications are few - namely that the men be able to get around, and be able to climb stairs. The question I have concerning the hiring are as follows: 1. Why is there no physical exam? Perhaps some of our guards would not be able enter into a footrace of any length. Once the men are hired, they learn the buildings, and must learn a training manual written by Mr. Caudle. Mr. Caudle pointed out that most of the training the men receive is on-the-job training. When asked why there was not a more stringent training course, Mr. Caudle replied that most of the men have had Army or some sort of police experience. 1. Why is there no written test on the manual? Perhaps on the test, there could be judgmental type questions. 2. Why is there not training period? The men should make rounds a few times before they are acutally placed on the job. 3. Why is there no training in the use of armaments? Perhaps the men could go to the police range for target practice. Even though most - of the men have had training in the use of guns, practice would be beneficial. Mrs. Caudle does check on the men at different times. He comes to Salem and finds every man that is supposed to be on the job. While he did not say how many times he comes to check, he does come ~ and every shift is checked. He calls the guards at the beginning of every shift, every day to see who has not come to work. If no one can be found to replace the guard, Mr. Caudle himself comes -Amanda Robinson Dear Editor, TH€ WLCMITC Prunedj>y LindMy PuMiehinc Co. and published every Friday of the College year by the Student Body of Salem College. Jazz Ensemble last Monday night. The music was excellent, the reception was well-done, and I say “hats off’ to Incunabula for providing one of the best evenings of entertainment we’ve had on the Salem campus all year. I, for one, appreciate the effort Incunabula has been making to offer that “something more’’ outside of the classroom to the Salem community; from the good turn-out at the concert, it appears that many others are appreciative as well. For those who weren’t at the concert, you missed seeing some real talent; for those who were, why not let Sally or Becky or one of the others know what you though about it? Incunabula, keep up the good work! Listed below are constitutional Amendments which will be voted on by the student body in upcoming SGA meetings. A quorum of % of the members of SGA are required for a voting to occur, and a % majority of those voting is required for adoption. All students are encouraged to read and consider them carefully prior to the actual voting. Discussions on the amendments will be heard before the final balloting. Why is there no re- evaluation of the guards periodically? It could be a written test, a review of their reports filed, and some sort of test on their use of his gun. The hiring of security guards is in part dependent on the money available. Private institutions traditionally have not paid as much money as the public institutions. The suggestions presented here would not be exorbitant - the cost would probably be minimal, but they would improve the overall security system. BY-LAWS II. Finances.
