page 4 Information, Interdorm Seeks To Unify Salem Campus by Michelle Duffie and Anne Tucker First of all. Interdorm would like to welcome new and returning students to Salem. We'are*'iooking forward to a challenging but enjoyable year. One of Interdorms most important duties is to take care of any cases within the dorms. For example, we handle cases concerning drinking, disrespect to fellow students or endangering security of the dorms. Our policies remain basically unchanged, except for an added clause concerning the hazing of students. (You may see , page 34 of your handbooks for details). We do hope that through education and prevention that our cases will be kept to a minimum this year. On the lighter side. Interdorm plans to extend its previous role on campus by organizing various events intended for the recreation and unification of students. Suggestions for upcoming activities include a "get acquainted" dinner for the purpose of mixing classes and dorms, a picnic on the patio, and a jack-o-latern contest between SGA and YOU So YOU don't think that the Student Government of Salem College has anything to do with you. You feel that your ideas, opinions, and comments don't mean diddly-squat. Well you know what??? You're WRONG!!! And for once...that's GREAT, INCREDIBLE, and down-right MARVELOUS. You see, Salem College is a liberal arts College designed to be run by a self-governing student body. In other words, we are mature enough to make our own decisions concerning the health, welfare, and moral fortitude of this fine institution and its student body. Our handbook states: The organization shall be called the Student Government Association of Salem College. The purpose of this Association shall be to foster the individual and community interests of Salem College students by maintaining a high standard of contact, by creating . a spirit of unity, and by developing a sense of individual responsibility and adherence to the Honor Tradition of Salem College. All students of Salem College, with the exception of Continuing Studies students, shall be members of the Association. If you still feel that you haven't had the opportunity or privilege to be an active part in the student' Government then think about this... If you've ever; attended an SGA meeting been through Orientation served on Leg. Board been before Honor Council or Interdorm gone to a mixer or a dance played a sport joined a club seen a play listened to a concert taken out a student loan had a student I.D. made rented a refrigerator bought a sandwich in the Day Student Center had your picture in the yearbook written a poem for Incunabula read the Salemite participated in Fall Fest been a class officer or student representative voted on visitation or cable channels for your dorm participated in electing anyone for anything bought a soft drink from a campus machine filled up a cooler from an ice machine received a parking ticket. These are just a few of the ways that the SGA of Salem College touches your life. By now you've come to realize that each and every one of you play an integral part in the government of Salem. 'This is why the Executive Board would like to encourage you to share your concerns, ideas, and comments with us. Because After all, we're here to serve you! Sincerely, Strat Newitt SGA President dorms. We will again sponsor a health tair in the spring to promote a sense of health awareness. We would like to encourage all students interested to present us with any ideas we have not mentioned here. The Interdorm Council would also like to express the importance of each student's presence and contribution to our campus. One of our main goals for 1989-90 is to successfully form bonds h#f(reen dorms and classes. We fsef the unity will serve to build a sense of comfort and trust which will not only aid the freshmen in their adjustment but also provide an opportunity tor the rest of us to become better acquainted. The Interdorm Council will endeavor to support and uplift our student body in any way possible. And eventually, we would like to see the same attitudes developing between all students. Such support should include the consideration to follow rules and not jeopordize the well being of others, as well as maintaining a complete mutual respect that will not infringe upon the rights of fellow students. We will be working toward a "true sisterhood". m m m # Honor Council: Stop and Think by Susan Yu The Honor Tradition is a vital aspect of the Salem College community. Stemming from Salem's beginning , the Honor Tradition has created a close-knit community. The Honor Code, the basis of the Honor tradition, provides several advantages. First, it established mutual respect and trust between the adminitration, faculty, and students. Secondly, the Honor Code provides a system to penalize anyone who has breached that respect and trust. Finally, the Honor Code allows for the additional luxury of self-scheduled exams, among others. The Honor Council is a neutral body consisting of the Chairman, Secretary, one representative fromm each class, the SGA president, Interdorm Chairman, and a Day/Continuing Education student. The Council judges the studennt's behavior, not the student. We are a fair, understanding body that is supportive of the student. The Council alone does not enforce the Honor Code. It is upheld by every member of the student body. Since the student body abides by the Honor Code , each student must be honest and truthful at all times. Otherwise, the Honor System will be useless. The Honor Code and Council are not meant to be threatening. They are simply a means to ensure the high quality of life we treasure in the Salem College Community. The Honor Council wishes you good luck in the upcoming school year. m m ^1^
