Information page 5 Socialiies: Big3 + 3 by Leigh Cubitt Welcome back to school and a special hello and welcome to the class of 1993. Big 3+3 is ready for a great year and we're looking forward to each and everyone of you freshmen joining our organization. Big 3+3 is a campus group that plans and executes annual social functions such as the Freshman Mixer, two other mixers, as well as three dance weekends at Salem. The membership is open and we're always looking for new and fresh ideas; so I'll be looking for you on Club Day to join Big 3+3. ■►■►NOTICE’^'* The Freshman Mixer will be on Friday, September 1 from 9pm to lam. Upperclassmen are welcome starting at 10 pm. The band is the "Boneshakers" who play progressive rock music such as The Cure, The Alarm, U2, The Fixx Guadalcanal Diary and The Outfield. Admission is $2 for Salem upperclassmen, $3 for guests, and Salem freshmen are admitted free! This is a DRY mixer. Flyers have been sent to Wake Forest, Davidson, Elon, Guilford, UNC, Washington and Lee, and Hampden-Sydney. The Freshman mixer has always been a great way to start off the year at Salem so make your plans are we'll see you at the Maintenance Building on Friday Night. CAC Offers Involvement by Jenny Savage Welcome new and returning students to another fun and fantastic year at the big Salem "C". I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer and is ready to come join Campus Activities Council for the 1989-90 school year. Campus Activities Council (or for lazy people like myself, it's CAC) is a social council made up of CAC officers, dorm representatives, hall representatives, class representatives, faculty advisor Debbie Cates and anyone else who vyould like to join. CAC plans and organizes events on campus as well as off campus. We have 2 mixers a year, a mystery bus mixer, and activities in the Refectory, such as musicians, magicians. This year CAC wants everyone to get involved and help plan and organize more events. This year CAC is trying to plan some annual events (kind of like the ones that Big 3+3 has) and start new traditions. One of these new traditions that I hope wil be carried out for years to come is a Party on the Patio the Sunday after the Freshman mixer. We are planning on having these throughout the school year as much as the weather holds out and our money!! This summer, I have been working very closely with Libby Brown, co-chairman of Big 3+3 to hopefully plan event sponsored by both Big 3+3 and CAC, so look for that to come in the future!! It should be great! Finally, I would like to invite EVERYONE to come to our meetings and help with all these fun filled events because a few people cannot do it by themselves and it is a lot of fun if EVERYONE gets involved. We already have a lot of regular members who will be returning ( 1 hope!) and ANYONE is welcome to attend the meetings. What I'm basically saying is GET INVOLVED IN CAC, we really have a great time. Park With Care or of a Ticket Beware by Patricia Barnhart Public Safety would like to start the year by giving new and returning students a few tips on how to avoid parking fines. If you are loading and unloading your vehicle in the fire lane you must have your flashers on. The key words are loading and unloading - this does not include people. At no time is it permittable to park on front campus, although you may load and unload. It is also a parking violation to park in the historical district. It is illegal to park in: -RHD parking areas -Faculty/Staff parking areas -Refectory parking areas -handicapped parking areas -loading zones -reserved parking areas -infirmary parking areas -College vehicle parking areas. As for fines, not many have changed except for the cost of fire lane violations. The fire alnes on campus now carry a possible $50 penalty. Not only does Public Safety have the authority to write you a ticket for $25, but the City can also issue you a citation for an additional $25. If a guest disobeys the traffic rules you are also held responsible for their fines. Overnight guests must register their cars at no additional cost and park in the appropriate location. The Public Safety Department has a few general requests and tips to keep you safe and ticket free. Remember to always turn on your flashers while loading and unloading. If you are arriving on campus after dark use the emergency phones to call for an escort. Just to be on the safe side - go in pairs and always be alert! But, most importantly remember that Public Safety is always available to assist you. By following these simple rules you will be able to keep your bank account healthier and Public Safety happier.
