BAILEY BUGLE. BAILEY. NORTH CAROLINA. FEBRUARY. 19^^. -gafie .3 Principol. Reporting M, W. Weaver Our school has been selec ted to test one of the new experimental school busses. The new type bus is built along the lines of those used by the commercial lines. The engine is ac tually inside the bus, covered by a metal case. Small doors in this case permit the checking and adding of oil without hav ing to raise the case. The steering wheel is forward in the bus allowing the driver to sit at the front where visibility is better. SEATING CAPACITY The bus body is so made that several more seats can be put on the same length chassis. The bus here seats 6I4. students. The regulations permit a 25 per cent overload. Therefore, the capacity of the new type bus is 80 children. The capacities of the other busses in Bai ley vary from for Bus No. 5 to 60 for all the others except the new bus, No. 136. DESIGNING This new type bus was de signed by Mr, Earl Waters, Nash County Chief Mechanic. The body was built by the Hackney Body Plant of Wil son. Many people have al ready been to the County to see and to photograph it, I'Ir. Waters informs me that he will probably have to take the bus to Raleigh for inspection by the State Board of Education and some of the Legislat ive Committees. Douglas Brown is driver of the new bus and Thomas McKeel is his substitute. These two young men in addition to Hilton Lamm, who will prob ably drive it next year, were given special instruc tions by Mr. Waters before the bus was delivered here. This new type bus is be ing used in the hope that it will require fewer bus ses; will help improve the safety record of our sys tem, which is already ex- • cellent; will eliminate the necessity for many sec ond trips; and will effect the general overall saving in the operation of the school bus fleet. The Bailey District was chosen in order to give a route covering about all road conditions and to carry a maximum load. We are delighted with the re sults so far. By shifting routes, we have been able to elimnate second loads. SUPERVISOR PRAISES LIBRARY Mrs, Helen K, Taylor, Supervisor of Elementary Grades, made the remark to Principal Weaver that the Bailey Elementary Library had in it more books than anyother elementary li brary in Nash County.
