November 13, 1936 GOLDSBORO HI NEWS PAGE THREE WHICH CLASS WILL WIN? WHICH SCHOOL WILL WIN? GHS Eleven F aces Farmville Today In Local Contest FARMVILLE REPORTED STRONG GHS Has Hopes of Winning Game; Quakes Are More Experienced of the Two Teams The Farmville High School eleven comes to Goldsboro today to meet the GHS Earthquakes at Griffin’s Park this afternoon. The kick-off will be at 3 o’clock. Little is known of the visitors’ team, but from results of their games played, it appears that it is a strong one. Although they are not in the Class A Conference, Farmville is expecting to show up well in today’s contest. Coach Jeffrey has restrained the Quakes from their usual tough work-outs this week, in order that all names on the injury list may be rubbed off. The Quake’s plays have also been perfected a good deal dur ing the past week. With only one win on their vic tory list, the Earthquakes will go upon the field this afternoon with high hopes of the score being in their favor at the final whistle of the game. The GHS boys probably have the advantage over Farmville because of their experience in the Class A Conference. ' The Earthquake line-up is as fol lows : Snipes, right end; M. Daugh try, right tackle; Thigpen, right guard; Dawson, center; Wynn, left guard; Spence, left tackle; Hollo- well, left end.; Proud, quarterback; Potter, right halfback; D. Daugh try (C), left halfback; Triece, full back. GHS Witnesses Third Year Of Interclass Basketball GHS is beginning its third con secutive year of interclass basket ball for both boys and girls. For the first time in GHS each home room will have its individual teams, and then later the contests will be narrowed down to only inter class basketball. Unknown prizes will be awarded to the victorious home room teams of each class, while the Belk and Efird cups will be given to the class boy and girl teams which emerge champions. Miss Langston will be in charge of the girls, while the boys will be in the hands of Mr. MaHaffey and Mr. Cooney. A complete schedule of both boys’ and girls’ games can be found on any teacher’s bulletin board. CAPTAIN DAUGHTRY Dick Daughtry, pictured above, seems to be mighty pop ular in this captain business. Dick is not only captain of the football team but he is also co captain of this year’s track team. TANK TALK The GHS tank team has succeed ed in getting a dual meet with Greensboro High School, the first to be at Greensboro the third week in January and the second in Golds boro the following week. The list of boys out for swimming has shrunk considerably, from twen ty-six students to fourteen, since the first call for GHS aquatics. vwwwvwvvwwswvwvwv Griffin Motor Co. DURHAM BULLDOGS HAND GHS ELEVEN 19-0 DEFEAT Through their strong aerial at tack the Bulldogs of Durham High School handed the GHS Earth quakes a 19-0 defeat in the Griffin Park, October 23. Although they held them score less in the first quarter, Goldsboro’s weakness in both offense and de fense of passing proved to be a per fect target for the Bulldogs’ tallies. GHS Boys Again To Have Varsity Basketball Team For the first time in several years GHS will have a boys’ varsity basketball team. The team will be instructed by Coaches J. N. Jeffrey and J. W. Johnson, with practice beginning November 30 and games starting December 18. Games have been scheduled with Smithfield, Selma, Tar- boro and New Bern. Besides these, GHS is also anticipating games with various other teams. Twenty new basketball uni forms have been ordered for the boys, ten of these being made of jockey satin and the other ten made of moleskin. Twelve sets of warm-up clothes have also been ordered. BLACKBIRDS DELIVER QUAKES 27-0 DEFEAT IN MUDDY CONFLICT GHS Threatens Rocky Mount Goal Only One Time On their own mushy field full of mud, the Rocky Mount Blackbirds of Eocky Mount High School de feated the GHS Earthquakes by a one-sided score of 27-0, last Friday. Time after time did the Black bird backs shatter the Earthquake line by their fake reverse plays. The Earthquakes threatened the Blackbirds’ goal only once when they w^ent down to Ilocky Mount’s ten- yard line. The Blackbirds then tightened up to check Goldsboro’s rally. Captain Daughtry and Potter, in the backfield, with Spence and Kan- nan, in the line, starred for GHS. Patterson and Bullock, backfield men, showed up well for Rocky Mount. Raleigh’s fast and furious backs scored in all but the third period, at which time the Earthquakes tightened up probably as a result of the few words given them dur ing the half. William placed first in last Monday’s cake race and is also expected to do some placing this spring. TRACK TALK Did you ever see trackmen train ing in the moonlight? That’s what happened on a Thursday afternoon two weeks ago. The trackmen w^ero preparing themselves for the cake race under a big, round, full moon. The time was around G o’clock, but not dark yet. Gosh, these trackmen are romantic. I, wonder how many boys would have run the cake race last Monday if they had known they would have to wait so long before they were able to eat their delicious share of the honors. Nevertheless, they tell me those cakes were mighty good, even though some of them were cooked by novice cooks of GHS. Because of an injury to his ankle, Clifton James was unable to par ticipate in the Cake Race.
