Delegates attending the meet ing from Goldsboro were Mary Lillie Chestnutt, Carolyn Ellis, Colleen Cooper, Christine Cobb, Dorothy Mozing5, Pearline Ennis and Miss Mary Lib Ridge, advis or, Betty Hatton has been an out standing worker in the local FHA chapter sinc§ she entered here during her sophomore year, according to records. During this year she has served as reporter of the home chapter and attend ed the district rally. She has also been on many of the committees during the season. During the short time Betty has been here she has already earned her jun ior homemakers degree and is now working on her chapter de gree. Preside In District Meet Being the state officer from this district Betty will preside over the district rally next year. Goldsboro is going to extend an invitation for the district ral ly to be held here. There were 42 state homemak ers degrees presented at the con vention in Raleigh. This is the highest degree of achievement in the organization. The installa tion of the new state officers was the highligght of the afternoon session. Senor Roberto de la Rosa, a cultural agent for the Mexican government, was the principal speaker. Senor Rosa’s subject was “The Other American. Way of Life.” Following the afternoon pro gram Governor Kerr Scott enter tained the delegation at a tea at the mansion. Betty Hatton and Pearline Epnis were a^paong those in the receiving line for the tea. There was approximately 1,700 delegates, advisors, and special guests at the 6th annual state meeting. BETTY HATTON CINEMA HITS By Frank Mclnnis “Phone Call From A Stranger” is a magnificent picture. It has three of the most wonderful wo men in pictures at their dazzling de best: Bette Davis, Evelyn Varden and Shelley Winters. It is pump ed full of all the solid ingredi ents of a great show: Drama, Ro mance, Laughter and Wisdom. It rings a solid load of truth; it is possessed of a racking insight that never falls off the sharpness of its edge. It rhumbas with jui cy, jovial performances, pounces out with the consistant, unbear able tension and suspense that makes great stuff and brings noted Broadway actress Beatrice Strait, to the screen in fine fet tle. Also very fine performances from Keenan Wynn, Gary Mer rill and Ted Donaldson. Miss Davis can be one of the most com pelling and attractive lassies when the occasion demands and then again, well, you know, she can look just about as horrible as a multilated ape. But here she is warm, alive and delightfully . magnetic—one of her most ac complished characterizations. If Bette Davis is outstanding in her role, Evelyn Varden isn’t far behind her. In a double-fac ed role, she registers electrify ing intensity, artistry and versa tility. Her greatness is adorably absorbing. Shelley Shoots The Works — Shelley Winters also enjoys a meaty role of double expressions and she, too, squeezes everything she can from it. She’s funny, sexy, cuddling, innocent, flirta tious and lovingly human. I have long known that Miss Winters had plenty on the ball. This is the first time she has brought it all out. Bless *her. “Phone Call From A Stranger” is a rare picture. It is adult in a very wonderful way and yet it has something that will appeal to everybody. It is a rich and re warding motion picture entertain ment. It is more than just a very good picture. It is a perfect pic ture. SixGuns And Ava Gardner “Lone Star” is a pretentious flotsam with Clark Gable and Ava Gardner deep in the heart of you- know-where. They are assisted by Broderick Crawford, whom I loathe. The Lady Plays With Poison In “Another Man’s Poison,” Bette Davis, whom I think I have mentioned before, is always mix ing somebody a nice, refreshing shot of Lysol or a reasonable fac simile. I have one or two reserva tions about her work in this, but I won’t go into them now. Any way, it all comes to a complicat ed, impossible, over-plotted show, but a corking good homicidal orgy. Its weirdness will hold you and the gloom-shrouded verbosi ty of its setting enhances the piece by leaps and bounds. Even if you can’t quite follow it, you’ll have a howling good time sitting in on one of the screen’s most ovei'bearing round of double- crosses, sadism and schemes of the unscrupulous. The surprise ending is good enough to rate four dozen of Walter Winchell’s orchids. Rolling Eyeballs On Cutthroat Avenue In additon to the most breath taking climax I have ever seen, “Another Man's Poison” brings Bette back as a self-indulgent, morbid, monstrous woman. You may remember that nobody’s as good as Bette when she’s bad and that she put on QUITE a show a couple of years ago in that su perb film, “Beyond The Forest”, in which she employed the biggest batch of eye-rolling and hip- slinging since the cops closed Red Hot Mama Gargana’s jump ing Ja*z House over on Cutthroat Avenue. “Another Man’s Poison” was full of holes but I had a right good time watching it. Jane Russell Rides Again RKO Radio is the one studio in Hollywood that can enjoy the distinction of not having made a good picture in two years. The latest Jane Russell clambake, “The Las Vagas Story” is no ex ception. I am not one who is nuts about Miss Russell but I will say she’s a better actress today than she was four years ago.
