Photo by Hutchisson Photo by Hutchisson Recently the GRYPHON took a survey to find out how many student assistants work ed in the different departments around Senior High. The GRY PHON also calculated the amount of money the school system would have to pay if they employed persons outside the school to perform the various duties that the student assistants carry out. Nurses Assistants Mrs. Vivian Williams, the school nurse for the Rocky Mount Senior High, has three students who work as nurse’s assistants during the day. The first aid department saves $1,908 a year by having stu dents volunteer to work. The three assistants are Carolyn Alford, Wilma Porter and Kim Moore, The nurse’s assistants commented on the different incidents they encounter each day, most of them about stu dents who fake illnesses so they can check out of school. “One day these students came in the nurse’s office, they saw that the nurse wasn’t in so they asked me if I would make them a corridor pass. It was so funny to me. I just died laughing. I could hardly stop. That has happened to me so many times and from students I didn’t even think would try to skip classes. That’s one of the main incidents that I have faced and dealt with while working for the nurse,” said Carolyn Alford. Main Office Assistants There are 11 students work ing in the main office during each day. They are Debbie Glover, Harriet Snow, Debbie Hicks, Hope Reese, Allison Pittman, Stephanie Phillips, Wendy Cooper, Lisa Briggs, Elizabeth Kinchloe , Dorothy Steadman and Terri Roberson. If each girl was earning the minimum wage of $2.65 in the -main office, each girl would make $477.00 yearly. The llotal expenses for the main office would be $5,247.00 yearly. Guidance Office Assistants The Guidance Office has 12 assistants working for them during the day. The assistants are Toni LaGrange, Angie Mosely, Starletta Wiggins, Jan Pridgen, Cheryl Bryant, Carol Arrington, Kate Gregg, Misty Hoskins, Chris Howell, Lisa Howard, Kevin Bearsto, Frank Bradsher, Emerson Harrison, and Hope Reese. Jan Pridgen said, “The rea son I like being an assistant is I enjoy running errands. I like getting to know the faculty. An assistant is there to help the counselor by saving time and money, therefore, it gives the counselors more time to work with the students who have problems. If I had to recom mend this job to anyone I would say to them not to be shy and you have errands to run. To anyone who thinks study hall was a waste of time, this would be a good job. If you ever had a job you had to do—there is extra time for you to do it.” Misty Hoskins said, “I enjoy things to do. Enjoying some thing is something you like to do. I enjoy working with people and helping them. In working in the Guidance office I get to meet and help people in a lot of ways. Whether or not I got paid doing this job, I would still do it. We have lots of time for the counselors by running errands for them. This gives them more time to work with the students. If I had to recommend this job to anyone I would tell the person to be cheerful and willing to help.” The Guidance Office has 14 students working for them this year. If the Guidance Office paid the students, each student would make $477 per school year. Each year the Guidance Office would have a total ex pense of $6,678 going towards employment. Assistant Principals’ Assistants The Assistant Principals, Mr. Robert Miller and Mr. Charles , Davis, also have assistants working for them during the school day. Assistants working for Mr. Miller are Laura Ess, Phyllis Tillery, Mary Ward Robbins, Cathy Parker, Verenda Davis, Bunnie Goodsell and Jenny Ford. Phyllis Tillery said, “I was in study hall and Mr. Miller came in and saw me bored and knew I enjoyed working and helping people so I became his assist ant second period. I think I save Mr. Miller time and money because of his hectic schedule. I get people out of class and take mail to the main office. Mr. Miller goes through a lot and I enjoy making it easier for him because I’m aware of the prob lems he is faced with.” Assistants working for Mr. Davis are Bill Bullock, Renee Freeman, Jessica Brown, Ther esa Everette, Sharlene Eley, Mitzi Haggerty, Lisa Briggs,, Sarah Clemments, Cathy Thorne, Jenny Ford, Nadine Culpepper and Jane Lucas. Lisa Briggs said, “I think I save a lot of time and money because I can run errands for Mr. Davis while he tends to his other important business. Also, while I run errands he can be in his office and be able to talk to students who wish to see him or need to see him. This job gives me a chance to get to know Mr. Miller and Mr. Davis. It also gives us a chance to learn responsibility.’' Together Mr. Miller and Mr. Davis have 18 assistants work ing for them. If each assistant was paid for his duties, he would earn $477 a year. The assistant principals would pay a total of $8,586 per year for their student aides. Library Assistants The Rocky Mount Senior High Library employs 33 assist ants to work at different posts in the library each day of the year. Should the library have to hire people to run the check out desk, receive corridor passes, reserve books and service the study halls with reading mater ial, the library department would pay out $15,741 a year. The library assistants include Freddie Woods, West Mathei- son, Jamie Taylor, Nathaniel Graham, Sandra Bell, Mike Ward, Paula Atkinson, Donald Rogers, Frances Moore, Char lotte Vick, Lorraine Battle and Davil Willis. Jackie Costen, Thaddeus Taylor, Angie Joyner, Cathy Sharpe, Brian Gupton, W. R. Gay, John Hogshire, Melanie Parrish, Phillip Powell, Jana Coleman, Betty Barnes, Nata lie Barnes and Darius Miller. Bronnie Evans, Tony Barnes, Dale Allen, Clarence Wiggins, Teresa Kelly, Natasha Higgs, Mike Cooper and Kim Knight. Miller's Choice The ideal office assistant— something different to every mind. R2D2 or Farrah Fawcett- Majors, a billion dollar compu ter or a host of Playboy bunnies. Assistant principal, Robert Miller, took a serious view. “Someone who’s efficient, of course, on time and dependa ble. Someone I can tell some thing to one time and it will get done, or send somehwere and know that he or she will go there. Someone who doesn’t need close supervision.” He leaned back in his chair as if deep in thought, then continu ed, “Someone who will come in, do what needs doing, and then look for something else to do.”
