Two small boys were bragging and the smaller one remarked that his uncle had a wooden leg. “That’s nothing,” replied the other. “My sister has a cedar chest!” if you set a time—^meet it. The class decided to use the same style invitations that have been used in previous years. Sev eral styles of calling cards were shown and each senior was urged to place an order for them as soon as possible. Although several suggestions for the color of grad uation gowns were made, the class decided to have navy blue for the boys and white for the girls. It is undecided whether or not the senior class will be able to send a Carrousel Princess to the Charlotte Christmas parade. John David Moose, president, conducted the meeting. Sociology Class Takes Field Trip Fourty-four sociology students went through the aluminum plant at Badin on September 21. Coach Webb, teacher of the classes, drove the school bus. Inside the gates of the alum inum plant, the students were divided into three groups. Guides took them through the plan ex plaining how the material enter ed the plant until the time the finished product is shipped out. Students agree that the trip was fun even though they were a little dirty when they returned to school. C. On The Beat Hit hard by last year’s grad uation the Albemarle High School Band had to work hard to make a good showing for this season. After having started three \Veeks before school opened, things are looking up. Mr. Spencer Hatley, director of the band, started rehearsing the freshmen and several grammar school students before school opened this year. Later the older band members also started their rehearsals. When the football season opened here in the game with Winecoff, the band was all set. Halftime performances have been given at all the games. The show at the Lexington game was built around precision drill. Much work was involved in producing this perforniance. The band recently received an invitation to the football game between Duke University and the University of Tennessee on Oc tober 2. It has not yet been de cided whether or not the band will accept this invitation. As yet, officers for this year’s band have not been elected. MMM Committee Plans Initiation Plans for the coming year were discussed by the executive com mittee of the Modern Music Mas ters last week at a special meet ing held in Mr. Fry’s home. The committee consists of this years’ officers and the sponsors. Officers are France Ross, pres ident; Arce Rose Rich, vice pres ident; Sue Whitley, secretary; Edward Hatley, treasurer; and Elaine Lowder, historian. Spencer Hatley will be sponsor this year, with Mr. Fry and Mr. Pender- graft serving as co-sponsors. Plans for the next initiation, which will be held on October 31, were begun. At this time 12 new members will be initiated, five band members and seven mixed chorus members. Some of the qualifications for member ship are: He or she must have been a member of either the chorus or band for the previous year. He must be a member of the junior or senior class. In the two meetings of the year, plans have made for initia tion of new members, a booth at the Stanly County Fair, and a fashion show in the Stanly Coun ty F.H.A. Rally, October 7. Albemarle girls are to model dance dresses in the show. Linda Duke will wear a square dance outfit, Sybil Efird will be dressed for an inforrnal dance, Jeanette Hinson will dress for a school dance, and Lois Harwood will show the formal. Science Classes Get Early Start Things are really booming in Mr. R. C. Hatley’s lab this year. Everybody is all up in the air about the new Physics and Chem istry books issued to them. Mr. Hatley was very much pleased with the contents of the new books and plans to get some good experiments from them. Everybody was kept pretty busy preparing for the science display in the county fair. Some of the projects featured were posters from the ninth grade general science classes, a high voltage Telsa Coil, a radio receiver and transmitter, and an apparatus showning Burnoulli’s principle. As you can see, Mr. Hatley is starting out with his pupils on another adventurous year in the field of science. Football Fan (arriving late):. “What’s the score?” Man in the next seat: “Nothing to nothing.” Fan: “Good game?” Man: “Don’t know. It hasn’t started yet.” sic. Other things discussed were dates for meetings and the dif ferent committees which will be needed during the coming year.
