District Contest Is Facing Band Mary Jo Winn Had the question “Is there a doctor in the house?” been asked in the band hall several days ago, it would have received an affirma tive answer. Visiting with the band was Mr. Benjamin Dunford, who has a doctor’s degree in mu sic. Dr. Dunford may visit with the band again before tHe district contest in order to try his hand at directing the band. Salisbury will be the location of the district band contest on March 5. Numerous senior high and jun ior high bands from this district will participate in this event. “Lustspeil”, “Host of Freedom”, “Moods Interlude”, “Thendara Overture”, and “Mexican Over ture” are several of the numbers which the band is now practicing in preparation for this event. With lots of practice and a little luck, perhaps the band will rate higher this year than in previous years. Priscilla McSwain, Robert Id- dings, Jan Russell, Sandra Huney cutt, and Jane Boaz attended the annual band clinic at Rockingham January 29-30. Added to the schedule of entertainment this year was a banquet at the Orange Bowl Restaurant. A singing group, the Eight o’Clockers, composed of about 23 Rockingham High School students, entertained the band students, who represented many schools in the Piedmont section of the state. Here is a valentine from one band member to another — I’ll play your horn, and you can play mine If you will just be my Valentine! HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY! Calling All Girls To Action Only 323 Shopping Days Girls, here’s yoUr chance. Here is the chance of a life time all wrapped up into one big bundle. Are you tired of being left out of parties? Do the boys shun and avoid you? Are you just plain LONELY? Well, now there is a new remedy for all of you who are forced into the so-called “Old Maid’s Club”. This new wonder working drug is called Leap Year. . According to the astronomers of Julius Caesar, 46 B. C., who were the first to establish a standard calendar, over a period of four years there is slowly added an extra day that has to be account ed for. This is due to the fact that the solar year is a little less than 365 days and 6 hours. On the fourth year a day gradually approaches. February, being the shortest month of the year, was given the honor of having the won derful day added to it. During Leap Year all customs concerning courtship and mar riage are reversed. No longer do you have to sit and wait for that silly boy to get up enough nerve to call and stumble around try ing to ask you for a date, B brave! Get some courage tha' every American^ blooded womai should have. Call him! Every bodj'’s doing it. (They have ai excuse.) Why, just think. Even in 128! a law was passed in Scotland say ing, “It is statut and ordaint thal during the rein of hir maist blissi' Megeste, for ilk yeare known a: lepe yeare, ilk mayden shall haf liberte to bespeke ye man sh like, albeit he refuses to taik hii to be his lawful wyfe, he shall bf mulcted in ye sum an pundis oi less.” Well, if Scotland can do it ii' 1288, you can do it in 1960. YoU have only 322 more days. OoopSi sorry. Correction, 323 more day' — It’s Leap Year! Inquiring of her second period solid geometry class Miss Caugh- man questioned, “What kind oi circles are latitudes?” In his usuar manner, Ray Ter ry gave the answer, “Rouno ones!” For Happy Motoring Visit WILHELM'S ESSO ofte„ Phone YU 2-4813 :: 192 N.
