Page 8 THE FULL MOON February 12, 1960 Importance Of Highway Safety Stressed In Chapel Program By comparing his experiences on the track to highway situa tions, Duane Carter, a 25-year auto racing veteran, stressed in a chapel program Monday morn ing the importance of highway safety to students. Mr. Carter, who has participat ed in 10 of the noted Indianapolis “500” races, placing seventh this year, named three basic points as essential — courtesy and re gard for the other driver, mental alertness, and sound mechanical condition of the automobile. The Champion Highway Safety Program sponsors eight such rac ing greats, who are currently touring high schools throughout the nation. This effective ap proach to the highway safety problem is aimed at reducing the growing traffic death toll. Winning the National Safety Council Public Interest Award for Exceptional Service to Safety, this program has been highly re garded by educators and Civic and law enforcement officials. Since its launching in 1955 the program has been presented to more than 2,000,000 high school students and to members of the Armed Forces both in the United States and abroad. Used oz Abused? Have you ever asked yourself this question: Are you using the telephone as Mr. Bell intended it to be used? People nowadays have their own ideas about the telephone. Has the telephone ever rung at your house at three o’clock in the morning? Picking up the re ceiver a person hears a cute lit tle voice that says, “Guess who this is?” Of course at this time of the morning people are in the mood to play guessing games. The ones that have been inter rupted from beautiful dreams and sound slumber for these ab surd reasons are doctors, who adore answering the phone to sa tisfy the whim of some indivi duals. The intruders congregate at slumber parties. A great deal of giggling has been heard after the receiver has left its cradle. These tricks are for kids. Here is an example in an important conversation: “Is Red there?” “Red who?’ “Red Pepper. Ain’t that hot?” (yuk! yuk!) This quote is famous and has been' used quite frequently. A teenager with a little broth er may have answered the phone to hear a sweet, timid little fem inine voice ask for him. By the time brother has reached the phone the admirer has lost her nerve and hung up. Party lines can be madde-ning! “Mabel, have you heard the la test on ?” This conversa tion takes an hour or more.
