Page 4 THE FULL MOON May 3, 1966 Morrow Heads Tracksters Rank High In Competition Thinclads Whit Morrow, son of Mr. and Mrs. Whitfield Morrow, 609 North Sixth Street, is having quite a year in track. On April 12 in a track meet staged at North Rowan, Whit scored 20 points. Whit scored first in the 100-yard dash; 220-yard dash; 440-yard run; and the broad jump, establishing a new school record of 23 seconds in the 220- yard run. Currently, Whit is av eraging around 18 points per meet in participating in these events. He is serving as Co-captian of the track team and has played foot ball for three years. Whit plans to attend Davidson College and play football there. He is a member of the National Honor Society and served as vice- president of that organization. Al so he has attended Boys’ State and was a Student Lion. Whit Morrow, Co-captian of the track team practices for a following event. Racketeers Net Victory Coach Tyson’s Bulldogs defeat ed the Statesville Greyhounds 6-0 in the meet staged April 14 at South Rowan. None of the Bulldogs dropped a match-David Smith and Ralph Burleson each held their oppo nents 6-0 in one of their matches. David Smith raked his opponent Teague, 6-1 and 6-0; Charles Dan iel tripped Boggs, 6-3 and 6-1; Bill Trivette outclassed his opponent, Cain, 6-1, 6-1; William Sherrill de feated Basinger 6-3 and 6-2; Bruce Smith topped Goodman 6-3 and 6-2 and Ralph Burleson won 6-2, 6-0 over his Greyhound antagonist, Burris. Netters Note Defeat Albemarle’s Bulldogs netters lost 5-2 in a tennis meet April 13 at Asheboro. David Smith defeated his Ashe boro opponent, Moore, 8-6, 6-3, in the singles department. Other participating teams and their tallies were Statesville, 34; Thomasville, 13; and Concord, 7. Albemarle got highest honors for the 440 relay, half-mile relay, and the mile relay. Whit Morrow and Woody Brigham copped first place for the Bulldogs in the one-mile run. Bob Overcash scoring first place in the 880-yard run, and Whit Morrow scoring additional points for Albemarle by winning the 220-yard dash. Bob Townsend earned second place for Albemarle in two events, the 120-yard high hurdles and the 180-yard low hurdles. Brigham se cured second place for the Bull dogs in the 220-yard dash. Overcash, Townsend and Brooks gained third place in the high jump, triple jump, and 440-yard dash. Albemarle took no fourth place positions. with a 10.3 second sprint; and the 440-yard run with a time of 53.1 seconds. Bobby Overcash scored 14V4 points for the Bulldogs. He placed first in the high jump on a five foot eight inch leap; first in the 880-yard run with a time of two minutes, five seconds; second in the broad jump; and was a mem ber of the first-place Bulldog 440- yard relay team. Bob Townsend garnered 11% points including first place in the triple jump with a distance of 37 feet 9Y2 inches and second place finished in the 120-yard high hur dles and the 180-yard low hurdles. Reed Furr won the discus and David Russell won the mile run, good for five points each. Other individuals contributing to the Bulldog total include David Cranford, David Newton, Joe Ra- bon, Glenn Lowder, Mark Cain, David Moses, Woody Brigham, Joe Crumpler, Benton Dry, and Steve Brown. In the field events, the Bulldogs coached by Ken Frazier and Bill Cain, led 35-31, but in the running events the Cavaliers led 51-50. Bulldogs First Led by Co-captain Whit Morrow’s 20 points, the Bulldog tracksters defeated the North Rowan -Cava liers 85-82 April 12 in the North Rowan High stadium. This vic tory gave the Bulldogs revenge over the Cavaliers for an 85%- 82 Va loss at a meet April 5. In earning his 20-point total. Morrow placed first in the broad jump, 100-yard dash, 220-yard dash and the 440-yard run. His time of 23 seconds flat in the 220-yard dash broke his own school record. He won the broad jump with a leap of 19 feet 2 inches; the 100-yard dash Bulldogs Mar Wonders 3-2 Coach Jack White’s Bulldogs marred the A. L. Brown Little Wonders by a 3-2 score in the South Piedmont Conference base ball game played April 15 at Kan napolis. Sophomore Ricky Russell, win ning pitcher, allowed the opposi tion only four hits, struck out 10 batters and walked five; losing pitcher for the Little Wonders ac cepted seven blows, struck out seven, and let three free passes. Albemarle’s first run came in the top half of the first inning on a walk, stolen base, fielder’s choice, a single by Mark Mabry and a single by Tommy Smith. Kannapolis tied the score with a homer in the last half of the in itial frame. The Little Wonders scrambled ahead in the second inning 2-1 on COLLINS & AIKMAN Automotive Division Albemarle, N. C. ALBEMARLE BAKE SHOP a single, stolen base, and a throw ing error. The Fighting Bulldogs garnered two markers in the fifth inning on a double by Carl Hicks, a walk, a hit, and an error. Johnny Little went two-for-two; Smith, two-for-three; and Hicks, one-for-two to top the winners’ of fense. Hicks made the single ex- tra-base blow for Albemarle. He finished first in the 220-yard dash, 440-yard run, and broad jump, and second in the 100-yard dash. Bobby Overcash was the high jump for the Bulldogs with a mark of five feet and eight inches and placed second in the 880-yard run for a total of eight points. Bob Townsend gained first place in the triple jump with a leap of 36 feet, nine inches. He also plac ed second in the 120-yard high hurdles, giving him a total of eight points for the meet. Other individuals who claimed points for the Bulldogs include Roger Lowder, Joe Rabon, and David Russell. All three of the Bulldog relay teams were represented in the scoring column, with both the 440- yard and the mile team placing second; and the 880-yard team placing third. Thinclads Tumble The Bulldog track team finished runnerup to the North Rowan Ca valiers, in a seven-school track meet staged at North Rowan April 15. The winning North Rowan squad tallied 58 points, as com pared to the 46 earned by the tracksters of coaches Frazier and Cain. Other teams participating and their scores are as follows: Gar- inger, 32; Statesville, 29; Wilkes Central,9; East Rowan, 4; and Valdese, 0. Leading the Bulldogs in their Baseballers Out The baseball team got off to a one-sided start March 29 against Asheboro, as the Comets garner ed 14 hits to give them a 17-2 vic tory over the Bulldogs. J. R. Laton, junior, began on the mound but was relieved after three innings, giving up seven hits. Ricky Russell, sophomore, was the pitcher for the last four inn ings also giving up 7 hits. York was the winning pitcher allowing only four hits. Steve Hicks was leading swinger with 2-of-2 hits. Albemarle’s first run came in the second inning on a single by Hicks and a double by Walter Har key. The second run came in the seventh frame when Hicks and Harkey drew walks followed by a single by Jimmy Taylor and Thom as Fields. Asheboro’s runs came in the first, third, fourth, and sixth inn ings. Bulldogs Fall 2-0 Coach White’s charges fell by a close 2-0 margin to the visiting Concord Spiders in the seven-inn ing SPC baseball game, April 12. Concord made two runs in the top half of the fourth inning on an error, two stolen bases and a sin gle. Though there were runners on both second and third bases when the final out w’as made, Al bemarle’s chances did not mater ialize and no further scoring was made. Albemarle pitcher Tommy Smith struck out 12 batters and walked two, while the pitcher for the Spiders struck out 11 and walk ed one. Johnny Little had two hits in three appearances at bat to pace the Bulldogs in this department. Albemarle secured a total of four hits, as did the Spiders. Albemarle made two errors and Concord one. TTie home team left six base runners stranded while the Spiders had three runners left on bases. Thomas Fields stole three bases for Albemarle and Wilhelm, two.
