Albemarle, North Carolina Golfers On Winning Streak Clubbers Collect Locals Tops Bulldogs Second By BILL HARTSELL Congratulations to Whit Morrow and Tommy Smith who have been selected by their coaches as Athletes of the Month for the month of April. Whit, senior Co-captain, was picked as a result of the out standing performances which he has been turning out for the Bulldog track team this season. Both Coach Frazier and Coach Cain remarked that they are very pleased with the effort which Whit has displayed thus far in the track season. He enters his limit of four events at every meet and manages to place high in the points in each event. Already he has broken his own school record in the 220-yard dash, and Coach Frazier stated that he expects Whit to break the record for the 440-yard run when he gets pushed harder. Whit also participates in the 100-yard dash and the broad jump. Tommy, senior Captain, was chosen Athlete of the Month from the Bulldog Baseball squad as a result of the fine job which he has ben doing for the team. He pitches, plays first base, and is also a leading hitter for the team. From the mound. Tommy does an excellent job; if you don’t believe it’s the truth, ask someone who has had to face him. In his first start of the season against Concord, he pitched a 4-hitter and struck out 12 of the opposing batters. At the plate against Kannapolis, Tommy went 2 for 3, and drove in 3 RBI’s. ^ * * * AH of the ASHS spring sports’ teams seem to be doing fine, as it is not uncommon to hear the anouncement, “All of the teams were winners yesterday.” In golf. Coach Gibbs’ squad is leading the conference. Against North Stanly they established a school first in that the four men went below 300 for the first time in the history of the school. The boys setting this record and their scores are as follows: Tom Webb (74); Banks Garrison (74); Jody Huneycutt (74); and Jimmy Stockton (75): ^ ^ ^ The Baseball squad got ofi^ to a rather slow start by losing their first three games, but recently they have been improvmg their record. Perhaps the reason for their bad start was the lack of experienced players returning to this year’s squad along with the fact that Tommy Smith, the team Captain and one of the strong points of the team, has had an injured arm. ***** Coach Tyson’s boys’ tennis team has displayed its form well thus far by winning the majority of their matches. j!« ;{: »I« * The Bulldog track squad has really been doing well for itself, capturing a high percentage of the points at each meet, several times enough to win the meet. Several records have fallen to this season’s tracksters. In addition to Whit s breaking the 220- yard dash record, Joe Rabon recently broke the shot put record of 44 feet established in 1959 with a toss of 44 feet six inches; and Roger Lowder broke the 1961 school discus record with a throw of 126 feet, eleven inches. Congratulations are extended to Rip Furr who has been elected by his teammates to serve as Captain of the 1966 edition of the Bulldogs football team. Coach Gibbs’ golfers came through with 314 points to defeat the second-place Statesville by nine points in the golf meet April 1 at Thomasville. Asheboro tallied 325 points to capture third place; Kannapolis got fourth place with 336 points; and Thomasville finished fifth with 361 points. Tom Webb led the Bulldogs’ scoring with 75 points; Banks Gar rison got 77; Jody Huneycutt, 79, and Jimmy Stockton, 83. Tom Webb led golfers in the SPC with a 150 score after 36 holes. Albemarle was in first place in team scoring with 637 points, hold ing a 20-stroke advantage over Asheboro’s Blue Comets who had a score of 657. Tom Webb, scoring 75, ran into trouble with a triple bogey and a double bogey but made up for this by scoring an “Eagle" on one of the holes (two-under par). Net+ers Lose 6-0 The Bulldogettes dropped a 6-0 game to the visiting Statesville girls April 15, opening their 1966 tennis season. Furr Elected Ronnie “Rip” Furr, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill M. Furr, has been elected by his team-mates to be captain of the 1966 Albemarle Sen ior High football squad. Rip, a rising senior, gained a total of 356 yards on 104 carries for an average of 3.4 yards per try and scored four touchdowns, a total of 24 points during the 1965 gridiron battles.
