Page 6 THE FULL MOON May 3. 1966 Poet Speaks To Students Mr. John Ciardi, noted poet and critic, spoke at the Thomas Jefferson High School Award Con vocation which was conducted April 16 in Ovens Auditorium. In vitations for students and teachers were sent to ASHS by the Jeffer son Standard Broadcasting Com pany with the cooperation of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Mr. Ciardi discussed thoroughly the topic “Why Read?” His pre sentation was aimed mainly at stimulating the interest of high school students in the area of reading literature. Students attending the convoca tion were the following: Gwen Boyd, Dane Perry, Mike Waller, Grey Gamewell, Jane Sanges, Sandy Kelley, Penny Furr, Joy Vanderburg, Beth Moose, Jim De- Torre, Charlotte Gantt, Nancy Al mond, Bill Hartsell, Betsy Patter son, Debbie Weemhoff, Keith Wolf, Mark Mabry, Steve Brown, Louise Harrington, Joy Schreyer, Paulette Balfrey, Sharon Sides, Mark Cain, Beverly Tarlton, Marlene Whitley Cam West, Jane Nicholds, David Mills, Jane Lowder, and Ronnie Burris. Teachers who attended were Miss Gay Holshouser, Mrs. Nancy Gamewell, Miss Becky Stasavich, and Mr. Smith. Palmer To Study Word was received after this paper went to press that Oroon Palmer was also selected to par ticipate in the Special Science and Mathematics Program being spon sored by the National Science Foundation and conducted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, June 12-July 22. L Cashwell To Speak At Graduation Dr. T. L. Cashwell, Jr. will be the speaker for the 1966 Albemarle Senior High School Commence ment exercises. Dr. Cashwell, for mer pastor of the First Baptist Church in Albemarle, is now pas tor of Hayes Barton Baptist Church in Raleigh. A religious theme will be used throughout the service since there will be no baccalaureatf» service. The only public commencwient exercise will be conducted in the Junior High stadium Friday, June 3. The Senior Class is composed of 166 members, but the exact number to receive diplomas is not known at this time. C. and Indianapolis, Indiana, veter an of 17 years of automobile rac ing and a one-time competitor at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, spoke ro students on car safety, Monday, April 4, at 10:30 a.m. IV(r. Harkey is one of a team of eight drivers who have presented the award-winning Champion High way Safety Program to more than eight million teen-agers in the last 10 years. His subject, “Highway Safety Is No Accident,” was one of great importance and interest to teen agers who are taking driver edu cation courses or who are involv ed in traffic as they drive to and from school. Mr. Harkey commented on con trolled speed on the race track as against its opposite on the high way and presented a color and sound movie made at Indianapolis last May especially for his pro gram. Last May, the coveted Alfred P. Sloan, Jr. award was presented to the Champion Spark Plug Com pany of Toledo for developing and maintaining the program. The National Safety Council has rec ognized the presentation three times with its Public Service Award. Stephenson of Pfeiffer College Physics Depart ment presented a lecture and dem onstration to Mr. Hatley’s 1st and 2nd period Physics classes, April 21. Mr. Stephenson explained the theories of light, and demonstrat ed the use of spectroscopes for the identification of chemical elements and illustrated the properties of concave and convex lenses. Tony Senter Gives Recital Tony Senter, a former ASHS student, presented an organ reci tal, Sunday, May 1, at 4:00 p.m. in the Centenary Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. Tony, who is a high school sen ior at the North Carolina School of the Arts, presented a varied mu sical program. His repertoire in cluded “Grand Jeu” by Pierre Du Mage; “Echo Fantasia” by Jan Pieter Sweelinck; “Prelude,” “Fugue,” and “Chaconne” by Dietrich, Buxtehude; “By the Waters of Babylon” by Johann Sebastian Bach; “Sonata I” by Felix Mendelssohn; and “Two Or gan Psalms” by Heinz-Warner Zimmerman. Tony, a member of the local National Honor Society, is a stu dent of Mrs. Margaret V. Sand- resky at the NCSA. Student Council Varies Activities Good Sportsmanship and Code of Ethics cards were distributed by Student Council members Wednes day, April 20. Key words of the Code of Ethics spell Albemarle High; the Sportsmanship Code spells Bulldogs. Students were ask ed to sign the pledge and try to follow these codes. Jane Lowder, secretary of the North Carolina Student Council Congress gave an address at the Central District Meeting held at Reynold’s High School in Winston- Salem, Saturday, April 23. Jane spoke about the 1965 Student Coun cil Workshop at Mars Hill. Officers and representatives con ducted a fund raising project by sponsoring a concession stand at the annual Fiddler’s Convention in the gym Saturday night, April 23. The musicians came from all parts of North Carolina and sur rounding states. DE Classes To Present Joint Banquet Plans are now underway for an Employer-Employee Banquet to be given Wednesday, May 4, at North Stanly by Albemarle Distri butive Education classes and North Stanly DE and Marketing classes. The theme of the banquet will be “The DECA Club,” and will be carried out with decorations per taining to a nightclub. DE stu- . dents will present the program and special entertainment will be Terry Goodman, an ex-DE stu dent who is presently employed as a dancer and model in Charlotte. DE students, their employers, school board members and super intendents of both the city and county school systems, and special guests will attend the banquet. North Stanly is in charge of dec orations for the banquet and Al bemarle will provide programs and invitations. Biology Students Study Anatomy Advanced biology students are now engaged in the dissection of various animals. They previously made a thorough study of the Ani mal Kingdom through anthropods. At the present time, they are dis secting and examining the animals they studied and making draw ings of their internal anatomies. French Students Study Art French III students are present ly engaged in an extensive study of French art. Each student is preparing an oral report on a fam ous French artist. In addition to the artists, the study includes learning how the influence of different art schools has played an important role in the history of French art today. Eddins To Attend 'Y' Conference Beth Eddins, recently elected president of District Four Tri-Hi-Y will attend conferences in Strav- enger, Norway, during the months of June and July. In ad dition to attending sessions, she will also visit several surround ing countries. English Classes Study Novel Miss Holshouser’s junior Eng lish class has completed a re search paper on an American nov el, and they are going to begin a study of the Scarlet Letter and the Red Badge of Courage. Sophomores completed research papers concerned with world liter ature. They are now studying “Julius Caesar” and are also working on projects in connection with William Shakespeare. Boys Practice Track, Field Track and field is the order of the day for Coach Cain’s P. E. classes. The boys broad jump, high jump, sprint, run relays and participate in all the other nu merous field events. Coach Cain commented, “The boys are really enjoying themselves.” After track and field, the classes will start playing softball. Westerlund Chosen For Committee Mrs. Nell Westerlund, T V his tory teacher has been elected to serve on the Steering Committee for the In-School Television world history course. Mrs. Westerlund will serve from 1966-1968. During this time she will be attending special meetings and the regular Television Education Conferences.
