SIXTH GRADE
Edward Jenner
Edvmrd Jenner was born at Glouces
tershire, England, May 17, 1749. He
was still very young when he went to
Sodbury, where he was to study for six
years with a group of doctors.
While Jenner was still studying in
Sodbury, a peasant woman came to him
for medical advice and happened to
mention that she could not take small
pox, for she had had cowpox, Jenner
could not forget the peasant v/oman’s
words,
ViTien he had finished his course,
he went to London to study under the
great physician, John Hunter. Hunter
and Jenner were always great friends.
One day Jenner told Hunter of his
wishes to start smallpox vaccination
by using cov/pox. Hunter urged him to
really try the experiment. His first
experiment was a success.
The vaccination spread quickly*
The royalty of Yfales approved it. Two
of the Presidents of the United States
used it. People in Europe wanted it,
Napoleon had his soldiers vaccinated.
People in Spain sent out expeditions
to spread its use. The Queen of Russia
said that the first child vaccinated in
Russia should be supported by the public.
Vaccination for smallpox had proved
a success. Before it came into use
thousands died with smallpox each year.
Now a case is seldom hoard of in this
country.
