Why imt bavi- tliein earlier iti Ihe season ne.xt vear^ Even the most ardent supporters of 'I’nii Twiii will have to admit that it has in the past fallen sadly short of what a college paper ought to be, and that it sometimes conies a long way from being “the official organ of the student body of Afen^- dith College.” The greater share of the blame for this state of affairs tloes not belong on the staff, al though of course it cannot be en tirely exonerated. Other college I)ap‘rs have no difficulty in getting material. Tlioy can even choose from what is handed in, not being under the iiecessily of taking what they can get, good or bod. Jt is a jibysical im])0ssibility for the long- suffering editor and managing ed itor to M-rite the whole paper—and this arrangement would hardly jtrove satisfactory anyway. Nearly every college newspaper has a re- porti'i's’ club which is effective in |)roducing mn ferial. 'J’here ar- drawbacks to such a club at Mere dith on account of our relalivelv small student bodj’, and because we are already over-oi'ganized. 'J'he invariable excuse which is given for failure to perform duties on the stall’ of 'J’liK Twi(i is too much •school work. J’’ar be it from iis to advocate the aboli.shment of study in favor of a side issue like the col- h’ge newspaper, but it does seem that there ought to be a ha])py medium somewhere. Wo have heard that American colleges have harder and less useful work than those of Kngland and tlie continent. It is our opinion that Meredith ranks .somewhere near iho head of the list when it comes to difficulty of work. Social Calentiar May 8, Friday, 4:30-6:00 p.m. Field Day—on the campus. The many of us who saw the game were well aware that Meredith, if given the opportunity, could produce the best varsity team in tlie State. Let us look forward to this in the futiu'e. A student body of approximately four hundred ought to bo able to get out a good four-])age weekly ])aper if a college of six luiudrecl can publish an oight-page paper which commands interest and attou- tion and is admitted to be of a high rank as a college publication. If we are to get out a paper we want a good one. If we are not, let’s stoj) trying nt once. It has been said that college girls do occasionally think. If this be true, our Open Forum until this week has shown little evidence of it. Wo have often heard discus sions around the campus. What is there to ])revent putting your opin ions in Tun Twiii where they will do some good? This is your paper, and if you don’t take an interest in it, its days are numbered. Sunday in Mothers’ Day. Our mind is blank as was this space. And think and think! We’ve tliought apace. Oh come, sweet muse and lend ua grace, And send us words to rhyme with lace. The days do come, and swiftly pass. And green and lovely grows the grass. And as we gaze into the glass We wonder why we’re such a lass. For love ourselves, we do full well. And so do others, we’ve heard tell. Hut fate to early tolls our knell, And summons us to—ding-dong-dell. The doom of all is drawing near. And our exams we greatly fear. But this to us is far more dear, The spring has turned their fancy here. It makes them act just like a lamb, T^ach Tom and Jerry, Dick and Sam. i::vit each one in the whole big jam, Just makes me wonder why they am. The space is filling quick and fast, My inspiration’s almost past. I’ve shot off quite a steady blast, Thank Pete! the closing’s here at last, last. P. S. I thank you for your kind attention. Kalamazoo, N. C., May 4, 1925. The Manager of New Meredith, Method, N. C. Dkaii Slit: I am sure that iu the founding of your great and noble institution you have placed many modern conven iences and comforts in the reach of all, but I feel that there are a few which you will neglect, not because you do not think them necessary, but because, my dear sir, you were never a girl, or a night watcliman, or a State College man, or numbers of others of the same general line. Hav ing been all, or several of them, or rather having observed all those that I have not been, I feel that 1 am in a position to give advice and a frank, unbiased opinion on such. The life of a night watchman is a dreary one. There are tlie same scenes each night, only to be seen. Much of his time is wasted in un comfortable sleep upon his job. Do you not think that a nice, soft bed would be much more pleasant upon which to repose? Let us think of him when we are apportioning out our appropriations. The poor night watchman! How often they run down for want of a proper place to wind up their works! The problem of getting to town will be a sore one. But an easy solution would be to have a dozen or so pairs of roller skates, which could extend or contract as needed. Think of the two-fold pleasure aitorded both to the girls and lo their neighboring insti tution as the girls pass by! Showers could be worked in a two fold manner. They could be rigged above each bed and at a certain time each morning down could come the water, proving both a service in awak ening the inmates, and in stimulating their circulation. The position of “ringer of the rising bell” could then be dispensed with. Do you not think that it would be a glorious idea to consolidate all the college papers in the town into one? Let Meredith start the movement! With some of the talent and beauty displayed in all the scliools, I am sure that, with very little effort, a paper to equal the PoW-e Gazette could be put forth. I have many other suggestions as to Improving conditions, and should you act on tliese, I will send them to you. But I shall wait until I see the attitude you assume regarding these. Believe me, dear air, a friend and well-wialier of the New Meredith. Yours sincerely, Ima Goosr. M. ROSENTHALL & CO.
