OCTOBER 7. ^9B6 THE TWIG FEATURES The Cyclist by Kelly Wallace Gretchen Holt, a freshman here at Meredith, has a special talent that has given tier a possible chance of a lifetime. She is a champion sprint cyclist arxJ hias been invited to train at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Holt recently placed fourth in the Ju nior Women’s Omnium which consists of three events: the Middle distance. Long distance, and the Sprint, in which Gretchen placed first. She will mov« into the Senior Women’s competition this year. Because this competition has no omnium, Gretchen may concentrate on her specialty, sprinting, arxl go for na tional fame. “One reason I was given an invitation is because I will be a first year senior rider. The coaches will be abte to train me for one event, sprints, instead of three different events that are in the Ju nior Women’s Omnium,” Holt com mented. also said, “I would love to go out to Colorado Springs, it would be a chance in a lifetime, but ( also want to maintain my student status at Meredith." Another problem Gretchen is facing is the need for sponsors. The trip to Colo rado and equipment will cost around 5,000 dollars and she’s fuiving trouble finding sponsors to support her. “Unless I get some sponsors, I can’t afford to go to O.T.C. (Olympic Training Center).” She has contacted WRAL in Raleigh for possible spor>sorahtp and she is still hopeful. Ask the little children why they can't play outside anymore and they’ll probably tell you because it’s not there. You won't find it in stormy Johannesburg in South Africa and it will elude you on the border of Iran and Iraq. It’s not in Ha vana with Castro or in Moscow with Gor- ttachev. Nicaragua has been without it for far too long. What is It? Peace. Ttw next question is: What are Meredith stu dents going to do about restoring Peace to the four comers fo the world? It’s not a futile question. You're not alone if you feel powerless to do anything about tf>e world’s situation. Most people do. Tf>e truth is that your voice can be heard, that you have the power to txing about the changes that will make this world a safer place to be. Sitting in your dorm room worrying about a nuclear tiokx^st won’t change anything. Here at Kteredith a group of students are going into action. On October 11th at 10:00 am. in Jones Chapel Comfxrons Room, the first meeting of the Peace-making club will come to order. At that time we will dis cuss the issues of war and peace that affect us today. Everyone is invited to come and air opinions, ideas, and fears about the unrest that exists in our world today. Perhaps our sparks of hope will ignite a flame of protest that will spread like a roaring fire to the rest of the wortd. Isn't it worth, a try? A.S.P.A. Meets by Mary Mills President The Meredith Student Chapter of the American Society for Personnel Admirv istratlon will hold their second meeting of the school year on V^nesday, Octo ber 9. The meeting will tie in ttie Chapel Commons Room at 7:00 p.m. Memtier- ship in still open to those interested in tf>e field of personr>el and industrial rela tions. Dues for the year are S3 and need to be brought to this meeting. A speaker from the Raleigh area working in per sonnel will be present to talk to students and answer any questions regarding this aspect of business. Refreshnrtents will be served also. Everyone is welcome, so please join the rest of the cftapter for good comapny, good information and good food. Spellbound by Mary Mills Are you ready to be mesmerized, ener gized and hypnotized all in the same evening and all by the same person? Then get ready for the Tom DeLuca Show, a combination of comedy arxl hypnotism that make up one of the most requested acts on college campuses to day. Tom DeLuca, who appeared on the Meredith campus last September, is re turning for a “command performarwe". This night of captivating entertainment will take place in Jones Auditorium on Wednesday, October 16 at 8:00 p.m. Ad mission will be $2 per person. Tom DeLuca is certainly not an ordi- nary stage hypnotist. He received his Masters Degree in Psychology from Sageman State University in lllirtois in 1978. He spent several years as a clink^l hypno-therapist and seminar instructor tsefore he started touring about six years ago. Tom draws from his educational background to make his show a top qua lity, high energy event. The show is an unique experiertce for everyorte there. Ttie audience is amazed as some fifteen volunteers are simulta neously placed under hypnosis to give graphic and humorous proof of the power of the mirKl. So, if you want to tw a part of an adventure into the world of abounding comedy and tantalizing hypnotism mark October 16 on your cal endar now!
