Fast pitch softball team gets its start Pitcher Joan Wyatt at work. Bee Hive’ becomes ode to senior class by Kim Alien, News Reporter The traditional painting of the Bee Hive by the senior class was held Satur day, April S. Lori Doudy, senior vice president, said that the painting consisted of Comhus* kin' themes for the past four years; a poem to their little sisters; a poem to Poteat Residence Director, Ms. Thome, and Director of Student Activities, Rhoda Sowers; and a poem by Robert Frost dedicated to a deceased classmate, Jac queline Edwards. Dowdy added that they are working on a timeline of the events of the past four years. The total cost for the painting is ap proximated at SIOO. Susan Duck. Bee Hive chair, reported. The class will try to save paint brushes to be used next year. Dowdy said, "It went fairly well Susan Duck put a tremendous amount of effort into this and 1 really appreciate it." by Carlissa Oakley, Sports Reporter Meredith’s first fastpitch softball team shows much improvement already, ao' cording to Coach Cindy Bross. **Considering th^ it’s a new sport with new strategy^ 1 think weVe played very well, and with each game, we get better and better,” Bross said. With new players at second, third, and shortstop, defense is. the team^ strong point, according to Bross. Because of the faster pitclung, hitting Is a weakness. Although there are no seniors on the team, the six juniors who have played sin(« their freshman year have provided strong leadership. Junior Karen Mann leads the team in hitting with m average of.372 Pitchers for the team are Joan Wyatt, junior, and Debra Kirkland, sophohiorei A^rding to Bross, both pitchers an doing a good job. The team^ 0^8 record is not indicative of its talent. Meredith held Geofge Mason, fifth in the nation last year^ t0;a 4-2 game and lost 6-5 to a strong UNC-G team.
