Faculty spotlight: Dr. Donald Spanton loves his business by Kim Alien Dr. Donald Spanton became head of the business department last May. He is now in his fourth term as a member of the department With the increased enrollment of the Business Department Spanton explains that scheduling has become quite a chal lenge. Spanton sees it as his responsibility to manage ttie other faculty members and to provide them with the necessary resour ces. He also sees himself as an agent of Oie college with his department, in relation to other departments. Spanton, who is originally from Roches ter, N.Y., received a Bachelor of Science in Managerial Engineering in 1952 ^m Rensellaer t*olytecnic Institute in Troy, N.Y.; a Master of Science in Engineering in 1956 from Georgia institute of Technol ogy in Atlanta; and his Ph.D. in Business Management in 1972 from American University in Washington, D.C. Before coming to Meredith College, he worked for Lockheed Air Force Corp, IBM, and the Federal Govemment. He is also a retired Anny officer. Spanton stressed the improvements being made in the business department to meet the rising number of students who minor in marketing and other business related fields. Some improvements include additions to the computer lab and an active Business Advisory Board which meets three times a year. Despite the responsibility of being head of the department, teaching night courses for graduate school and tlw preparations involved, Spanton still tinds time to relax. In his spare time he enjoys shopping and refinishing antiques wiA his wife, Jane. (Photo by Kimberty Cook) “A Down home Family Tradition” ^ Carol M. Aqrften Do you long for quality time spent with mom and dad, and you just can’t seem to find it? Well, Student Foundation invites you to participate in an event created to allow just that time. Parents’ Weekend is a tradition for which Student Foundation has become known. This year it will be held on Satur day, November 8, and Sunday, November 9. lliis year the theme is “A Downhome Family Tradition” which will help exem plify the philosophy of good old-fashioned fiin. Activities have been scheduled for Sat urday and Sunday. Participation for these events is encouraged, but it is not manda tory. Some of the activites will include: entertainment by the Bathtub Ring, hay- rides, a pig pickin’ and festivities, worship services, Iminch; and open dorms during a desginated time period on Sunday. It may seem as if there is not time allot ted to spend alone with parents, but that just isn’t so. The activities scheduled are highly recommended but they are not mandatory, so use your discretion to choose those you find appealing. The special moments which will take place on November 8 and 9 will not pass by unnoticed In your family history. A pho tographer will be on hand to record the special moments shared by you and your family. A later time will be established so you can order those pictures which will best help you remember this time spent with your parents. Mark you calendars and call your par ents. Parents’ weekend is just around the comer.
