Plastic items and cigarette butts are the most common items found on the beach. Cigarette butts are not biodegradable and are mistaken for food items. Balloons can have a similar result and plastics just last too long in the environment. Please join RAC at 9 a.m. on July 5, at the Iron Steamer access site to help clean up the beach. Researchers hope to change the electrochemical process that corrodes iron in saltwater. This begins the conservation process even as the artifacts lay on the sea floor and saves lab time while also saving money. Researchers with the Underwater Archaeology Branch of the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources first applied anodes to one of the anchors in 2008. An examination in 2009 found that the process was working. Recently they attached the rods, called sacrificial anodes, to another anchor and plan to attach up to two carmons at the site. This "in situ" method of conservation is a relatively new process that seems to be paying off. It reduces or even reverses the amount of salts absorbed by iron objects. It can take up to five years to remove salts from large cannons in the laboratory, using an electrolysis process. Any time saved in conservation also means the artifacts will be ready for display sooner. Leam more about the project at www.qaronline.org. In addition to inspecting the site and attaching anodes to anchors and cannons, the QAR team was filmed by a French crew working on a documentary about pirates to be aired in France.
