I hope you are all having a good suinmer. Here are some of the things going on aroimd town. 2010 Hurricane Season. While we have technically been in hurricane season since June, we are about to enter the especially vulnerable period of late summer/ early fall. It is important that everyone be as prepared as possible. This is what every homeowner in town should consider: • Go to the Public Safety Building (aka Fire/Police station) and get a Hurricane Preparation Checklist from Pat Forbes. You can also get your Hurricane Reentry Pass from Pat. • Sign up for Code Red, the Coimty's emergency notification system, which calls 60,000+ county homes with a pre-recorded phone message that provides information on any anticipated emergency- service event. You may sign up at the following web address:www.carteretcoimtygov.org and clicking on the CodeRed banner at the top of the page. Direct all questions to the Public Safety Director Chief Bill Mathias, at 247-2268. • Sign up to receive my town e-mails. Send me an e- mail at manager@townofpks.com to get on my list. Repairs to the Public Safety Building. We have completed repairs to the roof and the air conditioning unit at the Public Safety Building. Audit of Town Finances. We will soon begin our state-mandated independent audit of our finances. We will likely have this completed in the September/ October timeframe. PKS radio station—1610 AM. PKS has a radio station. If you tune in, you will hear a constantly streaming broadcast of the National Weather Service forecast. You will also hear updates from town staff on the following: • Dates and times onboard meetings, public hearings, and meetings of the planning board and Board of Adjustment; • Dates and times on meetings for the Recreational Historical document meeting. Very soon we will put together a meeting (likely over a lunch at the Clam Digger) where we will invite some longtime homeowners and attempt to collect as much historical documentation regarding town history as possible. If you are interested please contact me at 247-4353. 2010-the year of the Trash issue. This year we seem to have a particularly bad problem with garbage being placed out too early, being placed out in bags rather tahn cans, and with empty cans being left out beyond the allowable time frame. Please ensure your home has enough garbage containers. If you rent your home, this is doubly important. If you are interested in hiring someone (at a very reasonable price—about $15/month) to roll up and/or roll down your cans at the proper time, contact us at 247-4353, ext 13. Do not put out, or allow renters/guests to put out, garbage bags the night prior to pick up. The animals take command. Thanks. Be safe.
