The 'Shbreltfie Ijie’cembef‘20l() KRAMER’ S morithly Report by To^ri Adanciger Bricin Kramer' o R N E R ori e\^ents iri towm. Happy Autumn. Here are a few of the things going on in town. Town Hall Meetings Concerning the Beach. Mayor Jones will host two town hall meetings to talk about the town's master strategy for maintaining a healthy beach. He will discuss plans on renourishment, our participation in the Cotinty's Master Beach Plan and his ideas on a town-wide sand fencing and beach vegetation effort. These meetings will take place on December 9 and January 13,6 p.m., at town hall. The two meetings will cover the same material and will last about one hour. Consideration of Paid Parking for Public Beach Accesses. The town is taking a look at instituting paid parking at our eleven public beach accesses. There are pros and cons that come with paid parking. No decisions have been made. We will Ukely discuss the subject at our December and January board meetings. Knollwood/Pinewood/Bay Waterline Project. The waterline project should be completed by early December. There will now be adequate lines (six-inches in diameter) for this part of town. Flood Mitigation. After the flooding from the October rains, we met with a group of citizens and staff and identified some mitigation steps that may be able to help with the flooding, particularly on the east end. The result was formulation of some ideas on capital improvement projects for consideration next year. There are two important aspects to the flooding issue that are worth mentioning. First, we have to Mayor's Memo By Ken Jones We have the best people in Pine Knoll Shores—the best volunteers, employees, neighbors and community. Pine Knoll Shores is known for its volunteerism, and we couldn't exist if it weren't for the volunteers and employees, full- and part-time, always working side- by-side as one team. During the floods in September, I heard from several long-time residents that they have never seen such teamwork at anytime in town, let alone during a crisis. The Planning Board, Community Appearance Commission, Parks and Recreation Conunittee, Garden Club, homeowners' associations (HOAs), volunteers in PubUc Safety and so many organizations and clubs, too numerous to mention, are vitally important to the team effort that makes Pine Knoll Shores. The events these organizations put on every year are what help make us a community: concerts in the park. Independence Day parade, Christmas parade. Kayak for the Warriors, HOA parties, birdhouse contest, and the turkey trot are again just a few of the events these organizations support. The day-to-day operations team of our town is also the best available. The Public Services, Public Safety and Public Administration teams take care of our water, mowing, town revenue, enforcement and protection. Again, the only difference between our town and a large city is the number of zeros in the budget and the scale of the operations, but the same activities still have to go on. I will institute a quarterly awards program called "Team Member of the Quarter" starting the first calendar quarter of 2011. The wirmer will be selected from everyone who lives, works or does business with Pine Knoll Shores. Winners will have their pictures printed in The Shoreline, receive a certificate of recognition at a town Board of Commissioners' meeting and receive a shirt that identifies them as the Team Member of the Quarter for Pine Knoll Shores. The criteria are subjective and will be based on observations, events, involvement and nominations of individuals or groups. The selection board will consist of the mayor, town manager and one town commissioner. The town commissioner representative will rotate every quarter. The most difficult part of will be selecting the "best of the best." There are limitations on what can be done here on a barrier island. Any idea of an elaborate system to put water back into the ground simply will not work due to the water table. The only solution is to move water rapidly and efficiently to the ocean, the canal and the sound—and to do so in an environmentally sound manner that the State Division of Water Quality approves. Second, we need to ensure that what we do makes sense financially. Reminder: Save the Date: December 4 - Christmas Parade and Flotilla. Our armual Christmas Parade will take place at 10 a.m. This is an all-volunteer event put on by your fellow citizens. This year we will move our Christmas Flotilla to the same day. The flotilla will take place at 5 p.m. This event allows boat owners to decorate their boats with Christmas cheer and ride a designated route through the canal of Pine Knoll Shores. Dinner with Mayor. The next dinner will be on Friday, Januaryl4, at the Clam Digger Irm. We will meet at 5:30 p.m. December z2010 Sudoku puzzle How to play: The numbers 1 through 9 will appear once only in each row, column, and 3x3 zone. TTiere are 9 such zones in each sudoku grid.
