MARK YOUR CALENDAR NOW. The New Bern Civic
Theatre will present Steel Magnolias, by Robert Har-
ling, beginning on May 5. The action is set in Truvy’s
beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the
ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair
done. Helped by eager new assistant Annelle, the
outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos
and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, eccen
tric millionaire Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet
tooth; and local social leader M’Lynn, whose daugh
ter Shelby is about to marry a “good ol’ boy.” Filled
with hilarious repartee, sharp jabs and bantering, the
play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act,
the spunky Shelby, who risks pregnancy, forfeits her
life. The sudden realization of their mortality affects
the others, but also draws on the underlying strength
and love which give the play and its characters the
special quality to make them truly touching, funny
and marvelously amiable company in good times and
bad. The dress rehearsal will be presented on May 5 at
7 p.m. with open seating at $7. Regular performances
will begin at 8 p.m. on the evenings of May 6, 7, 13,
14, 19, 20 and 21 with Sunday Matinees at 2 p.m. on
May 8 and 15. Tickets are $18 advance or $20 door
and students and active duty military $10 with photo
ID. For more information or to purchase tickets, call
633-0567 or visit www.newberncivictheatre.org.
ARTS INTERNSHIPS AVAILABLE. The North Carolina
Arts Council is accepting applications for two paid
community arts internships with local arts councils
or arts centers through Monday May 2.
This opportunity provides two individuals with a
three-month intensive internship with one of North
Carolina’s local arts councils or arts centers under the
supervision of the executive director or a staff mem
ber who will help the intern design a training pro
gram within the spectrum of community arts admin
istration. Interns receive a $5,000 stipend to cover
living expenses. The intensive, supervised program
is designed to introduce community arts administra

ture, planning, fundraising, grant writing, financial
management, marketing, programming, publicity and
promotion and interagency relationships. About 66
percent of internship recipients have eventually been
placed in full-time arts positions. The location of the
internship is based in part on interns’ interests and
the nature of the operations of the host organizations.
Applicants must have at least a bachelor’s degree and
demonstrate a strong interest in a career in commu
nity arts administration. Internships are scheduled to
begin on September 1 and end on December 1. For
