The Salvation Army By Phyllis Makuck William Booth, a United Methodist Circuit Preacher, started The Salvation Army in London, England, in 1865. Designed as a peaceful army to fight poverty, it gives its leaders and staff military titles. As the organizations officer ranks grew, so did its outreach to other countries. In 1879, Lieutenant Ehza Shirley came to the United States with her parents and started holding meetings in Philadelphia. In 1890, the U.S. officially recognized The Salvation Army under leadership of Commissioner George Scott Railton and seven other women officers who, at Lt. Shirley’s urging, had established a presence in New York City’s Battery Park. The Salvation Army’s purpose has always been to find people who feel they have no hope, no help and nowhere to call home and offer them help and hope. Its mis sion is “to show people the practical love of God.” Though nondenominational, it views itself as “a movement of the universal church” and holds “a faith-based approach to meeting human needs,” conducting Sunday morning worship services and Sunday school sessions. Carteret County has three Salvation Army sites. Administrative offices, social services, the church and a Family Store and Donation Center are at 1700 Arendell Street, in Morehead City. A furniture store is located at 1706 Arendell Street. In Emerald Isle, there is a Family Store and Donation Center at 200-C Mallard Drive. On June 23, Captains Anthony and Elizabeth Juliana were appointed as Command ing Officers of the Carteret County Salvation Army. According to Captain Anthony Juliana, the Salvation Army locally provides “emergency financial assistance for rental eviction notices, utility cut-off notices as well as clothing and food assistance. Our area fishermen are encouraged to visit The Salvation Army as needed for food assistance offered through the generos ity pf F9,o.d,Lipn, St:^bucks and;.Thfi Olive .Garden restavir, antk W«.iareHactlve|ini:he local Food Bank program offered monthly. We offer weekly character-building programs for youth. We also facilitate a variety of fellowship groups specifically for men or women. Our Community Care program makes monthly visits to area nursing homes, where we offer gifts and opportunities for resident visitation. We are equipped to serve as first responders in natural or man-made disasters along the Crystal Coast, providing food, clean-up kits, personal hygiene kits, blankets and emotional/spiritual support.” Further describing its role during disasters, Capt. Juliana says: “The Salvation Army is often regarded as a first responder to natural disasters.” In Carteret County, it has “.. .one mobile canteen unit, and by the end of August, we are expecting our second mobile feeding unit thanks to the generosity of The Big Rock foundation. Trailers are prepared with supplies for serving hundreds of meals daily....” The Carteret County Salvation Army employs 16 paid staff members. The vol unteer staff varies, but usually 10-12 volunteers assist in sorting donated goods. Volunteers also assist with youth program leadership, help distribute food monthly at the Food Bank and manage the food donation program. In 2010, 3,439 individuals were locally served through the organizations emer gency assistance program. 624 attended youth programs offered throughout the year, and 1,976 attended adult programming (fellowship or community-care pro grams). Recently, The Salvation Army here has started a program called Soup, Soap and Salvation, “connected to William Booth’s original idea to provide people with prac tical necessities and then introduce them to a better life all around.” In describing this program further. Captain Juliana says: “We use our mobile canteen to provide food in low-income areas of Carteret County, distribute personal hygiene kits for those in need and offer prayer for any requests.” In the fall, there will be a Back-To-School Program, collecting new book bags and school supplies for children and teens. Volunteers are needed to assist in pack ing and distributing those supplies. For Christmas, The Salvation Army is known for its Red Kettle and for toy and food distribution. It needs volunteers for these holiday programs as well. . This is truly a community charity. Captain Juliana says: “Local donations meet local needs.... Officers and staff are members of local communities and often participate in...community clubs, groups and outreach opportunities. We can only help meet local needs with the support we receive from generous local donors. Whether donors are offering their time, their skills, their connections with other people, their donated household goods...or their financial donations to help meet local needs. The Salvation Army is only as strong as the support it receives.” Those interested in volunteering should call 726-7147. Donations of goods can be made directly at 1700 Arendell Street in Morehead City. Financial donations can be mailed to The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 399, Morehead City, NC 28557.
