Women's Club (Continued from 10) Gail Halada and Loretta Poremba presented several raffle gifts donated for the Scholarship Fund. Gifts included a basket of grooming items, a condiment tray, a bag of breakfast items and Christmas decor, including a candle, placemat set, picture frame, serving dish, an ornament and a fresh pine centerpiece. These items were donated by Barbara Zaik, Mary Adamson, Evelyn O'Neill, Karen Betz, Sue Chrisman, Edy Rene Magel and Gail Halada. Kay Howe introduced this year's scholarship recipient, Brenda Hansen. She also received it last year and achieved certification in health technology. With this year's fund, she will continue her stud ies in nursing. President Bonnie Ferneau closed the meeting with Christmas and New Year's wishes. On December 3, the club ran two floats decorated with starfish in the Pine Knoll Shores Christmas Parade. "Sea Stars" played Christmas music and expressed Christmas wishes to spectators. On this float were Barbara Milhaven, Ronnie Stanley, Loretta Poremba, Carol Beckham and Pat Filan with Martha Edwards driv ing. The "Bichon" float featured dogs riding with Edy Rene Magel, Arlene Terrell, Linda Langheld, Kay Spielberg and Bonnie Ferneau with driver Ken Magel and candy man, John Lang. Karen Betz gave balloons and gingerbread ornaments to the Boys and Girls Club to distribute to spectators while she walked with her dog. The Women's Club banner, carried by Maureen Danehy and Susan Toms, led the group. 'Ihe next meeting is at town hall on January 27 at 9:30 a.m. with a social time. The meeting begins at 10. There will be a presentation by OWLS on the theme of rescued wildlife with a live demonstration. All women living in Pine Knoll Shores are urged to join and enjoy Club activities with their neighbors. .A monthly report by Town Manager Brian Kramer on events in town. I hope you all had a great Christmas, and I wish you all the best for 2012. Here are a few things going on in town: Getting "In the Know" in PKS Local Government. Each year the mayor and Board of Commissioners meet for two days in February to talk about the upcoming year. We call this our Strategic Planning Session. I think it is one of the best ways for an interested citizen to find out where priorities lay, what is the focus of govern ment and to find out generally what's important in Pine Knoll Shores. Keep an eye out for the dates. This is a public meeting open to all. Mimosa Bridge. We had a bid opening on December 13. The contractor that was selected will start work in the latter part of January. It appears that the timehne for the project will be less than originally expected, so we are optimistic that we will meet our objective of having all of the work-done by Memorial Day 2012. Sidewalks. As of the time of this writing, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (DOT) is still reviewing our updated design. The update, as men tioned in last month's paper, involves moving the sidewalk further off the asphalt of Salter Path Road - that is, as far into the DOT right-of-way as possible. This update will likely require more bulk heading, which we want to avoid. I am collecting an updated construction estimate, which I will present to the Board of Commissioners in short order.
