Friday, January 12, 1940 THE POINTER Page Three *——> 1 } 4- BRIDGE OVER Bi-Weekly Bison Sports GREEN WAVE COMBING THE CAMPUS with BILL CURRIE Well, fair students of this ole institution of higher learning, you will now hear from me. Don’t think that it was the policy of the POINTER to make me the recipient of the honor of writing this column, but it was a matter of necessity. The ole prognostica tor, my friend Buss Overeash, has left us for a time to go to the sunny state of Florida to study playing his favorite game— baseball. Goodluck, Bus Ml! The sports front in High Point high has been one that has seen plenty of action in the past week. The pride of the student body, the Bison basketeers, have cer tainly shown up well so far, thus indicating that this will be a pretty good season, but they will have to go a long way to equal the fine record established by our last year’s team. Tonight, the Bi son will move their bags to the cotton center of Gastonia where they will battle and beat the Green Wave of that city’s high school. (I’ve already started picking ’em) The score will mean a lot, since Gastonia is the first Western Conference opponent that the Bison have faced this year. “Susie” Preston—or to those who aren’t IN, Jack—is showing up well along with “Little” Hay worth. Looks as though these two boys will soon be giving the fel lers on the first string a run for their money. My contemporary, Soc Chakales, has been having a lot of work to do here lately, and it is only be cause of this fact that you are not being treated to some of his work this week in this space. I personally promise you, though, that in the very near future you will be reading a real sports column with the “Chakales Touch,” (That is a rare gem of literary genius). The Bison wrestlers are fixing to stick their necks out when they battle the Salisbury team. Last year the Salisbury boys took the Bison to ride in two matches, but (and I pick ’em again) I think the Bison matmen will bring home the bacon when they meet Salisbury. Pause... This is his third year on the Bison basket ball squad. (Photo courtesy Dodamead) Intramural To Begin Basketball Activities Boys’ intramural basketball will begin in earnest in the very near future under a new and better set-up, it was announced last week by Athletic Director A. J. Simeon. Until now the intramural pro gram has been taking place in the afternoon after* school; however, under the new plan the playing would take place largely at lunch periods. Various rooms will be made into leagues to be known as the Lunch Period Leagues. In this the boys will have the opportun ity to play before a crowd, and it is the hope of the proponents of this new plan that it will stimulate the interest in the intra mural program. By arousing new interest, it will be conducive to new candidates to take part and make the intramural program more of a success. The High Point High matmen will begin their season January 17 with a match with the tough Salisbury grapplers. Last year the Salisbury ag gregation was one of the strong est in the state and they took two matches from the Bison with impressive scores. Bobby “Rook” Sappenfield and Bill Graham are two of the most outstanding lettermen re turning. Coach Scott is optim istic about the prospects of the season. In spite of the fact that the Bison had a poor season last year they are looking up to a better year now. Other dual meets that the local matmen plan to engage in are with Thomasville, Greens boro and Winston (pending). This will be a total of eight matches since all wrestling is carried on in a home to home fashion. Since the Salisbury team will come here for the opener. High Point will go to Salisbury for the return match. In addition to the dual matches planned, the Bison intend to at tend the state meet at Chapel Hill, and to make a strong bid for championship honors. The state championship wrestling bouts are held in the new ultra modern gymnasium at the Uni versity of North Carolina. Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Of High Point OVERCASH IN FLORIDA Girls’ Sports Girls’ intramural basketball started Thursday, January 11th, and will continue through the second week in February. The various homerooms will have teams which will play each other throughout the season. Miss Stallings announced that the championship will be determined as much by the attendance of the members of the team at their scheduled games, as by the num ber of games won; and at the con clusion of the homeroom games the various class teams will be chosen by the captains of the homeroom teams. The girls pick ed for these teams will be chosen for their outstanding attendance records at the homeroom games and the ability and progress which they display. Inter-class games will be play ed, and a champion team will be determined by the number of games won. In case of a tie the two teams will play another game to determine the winner. Jack Hussey, big pivot man, a powerful offensive man, and a sterling star on defense. He has truly earned the right to be called “the whirling dervish un der the basket.” (Photo courtesy Dodamead) First Conference Clash For Bison The Black Bison quintet will open their drive for the Western Conference crown as they battle the Green Wave five of Gastonia in the cotton city tonight. So far this year the Bison have exhibited great defensive strength as well as a potent offense. This points to a victory tonight and also to a strong bid for confer ence honors. It will be the first conference battle for the Gastonia club which finished in the cellar last year. The Bison were in second place last year when the season ended. Tbe victors of the con ference in 1939 were the Silver Streaks of Charlotte. The only games that the locals lost in the conference last year were to the Charlotte team. Both games that were played between the two clubs resulted in Charlotte vic tories, but by only three points in the two games. Coach Simeon will probably start the following men in to night’s important struggle: Short, right forward; Welbome, left for ward; Hussey, Center; L. Hay worth, right guard; J. Hayworth or Preston, left guard. Furman Wins Hucks As Star Graduates Brantley Hucks, well-known figure in Bison sports, will grad uate from High Point high school at the end of the first semester. Hucks, who will enter Furman University in Greenville, S. C., upon his graduation, served his school as captain of the 1939 baseball and football teams. He is president of the Monogram Club and is a member of the Senior Hi-Y. The baseball team as well as the student body will miss Brant ley. All we can say is, more power to him at Furman. Bison Results High Point basketeers at pres ent have won four games and lost only one. Scores are as follows: Burlington 16, High Point 37. Thomasville 11, High Point 38. Reidsville 5, High Point 42. Carolina Freshmen 35, High Point 27. Raleigh 13, High Point 32. Gastonia ?, High Point ?. The two forwards, Darrell Welborn and Edward “Abie” Short are leading their team mates in high scoring in pre vious games. COMPLIMENTS Of N. H. SILVER CO.
