MARCH 15, 1949 THE POINTER Page Three Baseballers Mount the Diamond Who's on first? “Who” is playing 1st. Yea! That’s what I asked, “Who”.? “Who,” I said. It sounds like “Who” must be on first but “Who” is not on the H. P. baseball roster and hasn’t even come out for practice held daily on the local high school diamond. The local baseball team will probably be organized next week by Coach Carroll Bowen with 10 lettermen reporting, plus some up coming boys from the Legion team. The team lost only three men by graduation; but they were three of the best—all state Nel Cooper, Jack White, and Jack Ridge, in field men. The other infield post was held by Charlie Bry ant, whose strong bat will help the Pointers again this year. The outfield will be mighty with lettermen Rudy Upton, Bill Craig, Joe Robertson, and Joe Mickey returning. Mickey also handles part-time duties in the infield. Veteran catcher, “Pete” Jones, last year’s starter, along with let- terman Ned Weatherford are back. The mound position will be held down by Jack Powell, Fireball Kimball, and Fred Bean, all let termen. The Legion team of H. P. will provide material for the Pointers with pitchers. Scarce and Embler; outfielders, Levina and Wilson; catchers, Delapp and Fry; and infielder Jim Jarret. Cladd, Meet Qo4ftUi^ Afi'Ul / The quarter-mile track of H. P. H. S. will be red-hot with running feet come April 1, ’cause that day the annual class track meet will be held. This meet will bring out some ma terial for its varsity track team, as well as supply enthusiasm for the different classes. Following this meet the H. P. cindermen will enter in the Duke Invitation Relays on April 16. This will inaugurate the .schedule for the Bison boys. However, several individuals have already run in the indoor meet at Chapel Hill. Clyde Garrison, local sprinter, placed in the 1000 yd. dash. Basketballers Leave the Hardwood The Black Bison basketball ma chine operated smoothly through two tilts of the State Tournament playoffs last week end, but in the finals on Saturday night they hit a snag in the form of the R. J. Reynolds Demons of Winston- Salem, who knocked the Big Bison into the second place slot in North Carolina basketball circles. Beautiful Duke Indoor Gymna sium was the scene of three days of top-flight basketball in decid ing the championship titles of Classes AA, A and B teams in North Carolina from both confer ences. It was also the scene of surprising upsets and brilliant in dividual performances. As for the Bison, the tourna ment wound up the 1948-49 sea son of play with 20 wins against five losses, an unusually high rec ords. Soaring onward to the finals by virtue of wins over Hugh Morson High of Raleigh and Charlotte’s Central High, the Bison met their Waterloo, Reynolds, who had suf fered defeat under the paws of the Bison twice previously this year, but who came out from their underdog role growling. The 'score was decisive, 38-23. In the Class A playoff Hender sonville’s five marched off the floor victorious over Kinston. Trinity High shared the same top position in Class B when they de feated the Camp Lejeune five. All in all the championship play offs were well attended. Bison Wrestlers Place Near Top “The match starts,” the ref says. “Ready, top, bottom, wrestle!” Although no local high school grappler landed on top in the an nual State A.A.U. wrestling meet, held Friday and Saturday at the local Y.M.C.A., the local wrestlers took second place behind Appa lachian. Bison lads who took second hon ors were James Slaydon, Bobby Baird and Roy Bragg. Bragg and Baird were defending their cham pionship titles in the respective weights. Baird lost to Vlaynich (App.) by default; Slaydon lost to Dancy (App.), fall; Bragg lost to Davis (App.) 2-3. GREENE DRUG COMPANY 610 N.
