West Craven Highlights, January 12, 1978 Page 3 Your North Carolina Representative ' This is the first of a series of articles this newspaper will run acquainting the community with the state, county, and Vanceboro city government. Joe Bright, a local native of the Vanceboro area represents four counties. Craven Pamlico, Jones and Lenoir. He is in his fourth term as your representative in the General Assembly of North Carolina in Raleigh, N. C. Mr. Bright has spent most of his life in the Vanceboro community. He is a graduate of Farm Life High School. He is probably one of about four people in this area that attained the rank of Eagle Scout and he is very proud of this fact. His oldest son Joe, Jr. was also an Eagle Scout and his younger son Clif is now a First Class Scout in Troop 58 of Vanceboro. As the "Country Farm Boy”, a title put on him by his friends, Mr. Bright has a very busy schedule each week. He presently operates a business in Pamlico County and has farm interest in Craven County. He is active in community affairs taking a special interest in the local Boy Scout Troop, attending church in his community, and helping his constituents with various problems. When asked how did he get into politics, Mr. Bright said it happened at breakfast eight years ago when he and his son Joe, Jr. were discussing the many places he was working with people. He suddenly realized that he was very close to voters in three counties, so he said, “I believe I’ll run for representative and win.” He felt confident of winning at the very beginning of his political career. Mr. Bright has served his people well. Even during a recent illness, he moved his residence to Raleigh so he could still represent the people in this area. He is presently co-chairman on a special study for Commercial Fisheries. This study is to check the feasability of processing more of our fish production here in North Carolina. In Raleigh he represents us on the following committees; Chairman, Commercial Fisheries, Committee on Agriculture Finance, Committee on Public Libraries, and the Committee on Banks and Banking. When asked what would he single out to be his biggest accomplishment and he was quick to say that helping get the Medical School at East Carolina University. He has always felt that a Medical School in Eastern North Carolina would aid the people of this area overcome present and future shortages of doctors. What is next for Eastern North Carolina? Mr. Bright says we need mm-e fourlane highways into the eastern part of North Carolina. This will get more industry to see the opportunities available to them in Eastern North Carolina. He plans to work toward this need in the future. What do you think about our Eastern North Carolina Port Facility? Mr. Bright says we need to dredge our waterways so we can use our port to its greatest potential and be able to use the crane that is at present receiving so much publicity. Mr. Bright is married to the former Rae Allcox and they are the parents of three children, Joe, Jr., Clif, and Barbara.
